Star Trek Sequel Set For 2012

January 9, 2010

Paramount Pictures has announced that they will release the sequel to last year's Star Trek in cinemas everywhere on June 29th, 2012, the weekend before the prestigious July 4 holiday.

We know absolutely nothing more than that, but expect the likes of Chris Pine and the gang to return for another adventure. JJ Abrams will once again helm the big-budget project.

True, but I tend to agree with Patrick Stewart when, back in TNG movie days, he says there should be more time between movies than 2 years. He felt there should have been about 3 years between Generations, First Contact and Insurrection. (There were only 2.) The bigger time stretch gives people a bit more time to almost "forget" the previous movie...meaning they're probably out of the mode of watching the DVD over and over, and having Star Trek on the brain. It's that "over saturation" idea. Let the dust settle, then kick it up again. Of course I want it sooner, but by 2012, I'll be primed, excited, and ready for a new one.

I'm kinda bummed they're not going with the original 2011 release date, but I'd rather they take their time and get everything right than rush production and fuck it up. I'm so impatient though! Nero voice: "I want my Star Trek movie NOW!"

I wonder how they're going to handle the passage of time in the script? hmmm Are they going to pick up the day after XI ended and pretend the actors don't all look 3 years older, or will they handle it like the movies with the TOS cast and actually match the passage of time in the Trekverse to the passage of time in the real world?

One thing I'd like to see is less of a focus on Uhura. She's cool and all, but she's really supposed to be a secondary character. The focus in TOS was Kirk and Spock with a healthy dose of Bones on the side and everyone else making appearances when they're needed, and IMO it should stay that way. The Spock/Uhura romance was pretty unnecessary, if you ask me. I'm hoping they phase that out.

lol

They totally need to change the storyline for Urura...the whole Spock/romance thing was totally unconvincing.

Even if they just write her into a fight scene where she kicks some green chick's butt or something. lol

My man? No, not so much. But she should probably stay away from the Captain's man if she knows what's good for her.

I do. I can't lie about that. I'd do all kinds of inappropriate things to the First Officer, especially the nu! version.

But let's be real here, Spock belongs to Kirk and vice versa. Uhura can go have, I dunno, Scotty or somebody. Didn't they hint at a Scotty and Uhura relationship in TOS? Either Final Frontier or Undiscovered Country, I believe.
