No. It was the biggest disappointment of the year, by far. Yes, it looked pretty. But the plot was so terrible that I felt cheated. It was completely full of stereotypes:
Scientists = nerdy but awesome! Government/military = heartless and greedy! Hero = just a grunt with nothing to lose Natives = Primitive but in touch with nature, but still in need to help from an outsider to survive It was a huge exercise in white guilt (and to a lesser extent, Western guilt), which isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, when such an exercise is coupled with continued patronization of the previous targets of such guilt, it leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! That's not true! I was hoping to love it, and I've loved James Cameron movies before (Aliens is in my top 3 of all-time), but I was shocked by how bad this was. Worse, I feel like all of the characters were one-dimensional, and even worse, completely stereotypical. The way the Navi are depicted as a race in touch with nature yet primitive and in need of help from an outsider left me disgusted. I was ready to adore this movie, but I just think he missed the mark. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! He got my $24.00 and I'm glad I went to see the movie-slow storyline or not. It's never easy to address these issues anyway I guess folks don't even wanna talk about them in a movie format either

I LOVE Sci Fi when it serves as an allegory for real-life problems! Future dystopia films form probably my favorite genre of movies- films like Aliens, District 9, 1984, Blade Runner, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Night of the Living Dead/Dawn of the Dead, etc. are some of my all-time favorite films. I was really excited for Avatar to potentially join their ranks. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Nay. A bit uninteresting and too much furry service. Not even the best sci-fi this year (District 9, Moon, Star Trek, Hunter Prey, Franklyn). But the last half hour was glorious. [Edited 12/29/09 21:00pm] I'm afraid of Americans. I'm afraid of the world.

what is that? Furries are a subculture who fetishize over anthropomorphic creatures. A furry is harmless in their obsession usually, but some of them wish they could - how shall I say - go for a ride in Noah's Ark. [Edited 12/30/09 20:59pm] I'm afraid of Americans. I'm afraid of the world.

Nay.
Visually, yes. Over-all as a movie? The greatest? even new greatest? What is 'new greatest?' But the story is too weak. It's only visually engaging. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

The true story? As if nothing was embellished? I think the technical side of things is what was more true, as the love story and those characters were totally fictional. It really was just a CGI film. I mean, we knew how it was going to end, so let's get to the end and watch the CGI. It was very well done for 1997. The CGI realm was really starting to blossom at that time, with Lucas having just released the redone Star Wars films and the prequelology coming out soon, Hollywood was truly getting creative for once and making some visually stunning stuff. Titanic was part of that. Cameron was truly obsessed w/ ship wrecks and the Titanic specifically. There were a couple of specials on Discovery|HD with him doing wreck dives and exploring things, including the Titanic. It's probably why he hasn't made a movie since Titanic. I was resist to seeing 'Titanic' and didn't go see it in a theater until it topped $400 million. Then I had to see what was going on. If it's on cable, if I stop on it, anywhere in the movie, I just start watching. Visually well done, it picks up once we get to the iceberg. Then it becomes an action movie. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

And given his track record, that won't be until 2021. I see a sequel in two years. We know this isn't over. The Na'vi now have access to the store of human knowledge (but I wouldn't be surprised if the the sequel writers miss this fact of their world . . .)in one man's brain, who knows how we fight. You know the U.S. Marines aren't just going to take a whoopin' and just go home. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.
