A 60-year annual tradition that involved a mysterious visitor leaving roses and a bottle of cognac at the grave of writer Edgar Allan Poe on the anniversary of his birthday appears to have ended.

In a custom dating back to 1949, an anonymous visitor has come every year on Jan. 19 to lay three roses and a half-bottle of cognac at the Poe grave marker in downtown Baltimore.

But on Tuesday morning, there were no roses or cognac at the grave.

It is what Edgar Allan Poe might have called "a mystery all insoluble": Every year for the past six decades, a shadowy visitor would leave roses and a half-empty bottle of cognac on Poe's grave on the anniversary of the writer's birth. This year, no one showed.

That's so sad.

Yeah, they theorize that

1) the mysterious person could be dead, or
2) since last year was the bicentennial, perhaps the person though that was an appropriate time to stop.

^I thought that last year a new person was appointed to do this yearly. It's still sad cause EAP's stuff is just amazing and this tribute was sooo Poeish.

That is seriously interesting. I mean it was interesting to begin with that someone was doing that. I hope he hasn't passed away ;-;

Poe was brilliant...that's really all I have to contribute...interesting story

i loved that someone would do this for a stranger ( we don't know this for sure), but maybe it came out of the fact that the man saw EAP as a family member of some sort through his words, someone that he could connect to.
