'Star Trek' Most Pirated of 2009

December 28, 2009

Paramount's worst fears are confirmed: "Star Trek" was the most pirated film of 2009.

In October, studio COO Frederick Huntsberry delivered a presentation to the FCC that detailed how "Star Trek" had become a hot commodity in piracy circles. Illegal file-sharing had advanced from "geek to sleek," he said. Now, according to data from TorrentFreak, "Star Trek" was downloaded nearly 11 million times this past year, just edging "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" in total downloads.

Guy Ritchie's "RocknRolla" was the third most pirated film this year.

Interestingly, for all the fuss earlier in the year about a pre-release leak of "Wolverine," the film barely makes the top 10.

I grabbed it between the theater (where I saw it in IMAX) and the DVD release (which I own on BluRay). It was one of the best rips of a movie I'd ever seen. No pixels, super clear picture. It was just under 2 gigs. I don't know who ripped this, or what codec(s) they used, but it was spectacular. We watched it a lot before buying it. The BluRay is gorgeous.

I'm curious to see if they do more, and how they'll take the characters onward until where the series started. I thought the people in the movie did a great job at capturing those idiosyncrasies of the original characters. I'd actually like to see a similar thing w/ the Next Generation crew. We've seen a lot of storyline about Worf as a child, we know about Picard's family being killed in a fire when he was a boy, we sort of know a few things about Deanna Troi as a kid, or how about Dr. Soon and his wanting to create Data/Lore (which reminds me of Anakin creating C3PO). I think Riker would be a total ladies man in college, similar to what Kirk's character was.

My roommate just bought the original six movies on BluRay. He bored the fuck out of us with The Motion Picture. It's a lame ass movie. The rest get relatively more interesting, but that first one was as boring as shit. He knows all the words to all of them too. I am more of a Next Generation guy myself.

VEEEEE-GUR!

I just noticed the link is from TheWrap.com. I keep in touch w/ one of the writers there, who I worked with while doing my Big Brother blog this year. He did exclusive interviews w/ Exec. Producer Allison Grodner each week. I cross-promoted them on my blog, and on my BB Twitter.

Im not into pirate movies at all,I've seen some stinking copies.
The guy from Heroes was a tremendous Spock.
I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed the film and will definitely get it on Blu-Ray.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

The menus on the BluRay are really nice too. Just very Trek-ish.

And there's always good copies out there. Wait until about 2 months before the DVD release. The DVD rips start to leak out. The one I found back in August or Sept was just a spectacular rip. I never grab a cam shot

I thought this Star Trek would SUCK. It wasn't great but it didn't suck and since we're in an age where mediocrity rules, not horrible = SUCCESS.
As far as pirating goes, fuck em, no sympathy for the studios. Most movies are lousy and in NYC a ticket is almost $13.
Most of the time I rent the DVD and rip it with Handbrake
biggrin
