question for for my LGBT orgers. upon labeling your sexual orientation(which labeling is bad, but i digress) does anyone mind using the term queer, instead of gay or lesbian or bisexual, etc. my lesbian co worker states that she likes using this term, because it implies the who community as one. what do you think? im fine with either term. i usually don't use both thought.

To the extent gays, lesbians, bis, trans, yada yada yada.... can or should be thought of as a single "community" (because many argue their concerns are varied enough that this is, in fact, a disservice), I don't mind "queer." But I think the most comprehensive term I've heard -- with the least political/historical baggage -- is "gender variant."

hrrrm. I really don't think I like that term ("gender variant") at all. I don't see that as describing me at all.

I identify myself as queer. It's a word I like, because it's not so strictly defined.
It's what you make it.

It would be an odd term in reference to an individual. I've heard it in reference to group.

I suppose, but I really don't see myself as a "gender variant." My gender is ver much nailed down. And I suppose being attracted to the same gender falls under "variant" but it doesn't really speak to my own personal psyche, how I live my own life, or my own identity.

Yeah, the "variant" here doesn't refer to variability within an individual, but rather gay, lesbian, bi, trans, etc. (as a group) variability from a hetero male/female majority.

I understand what you mean, though. Not everyone takes kindly to viewing hetero as the "standard," and no label will suit everyone.
