Would you buy a personalized poem from a poet? Hi All, as some of you may know I launched my own poetry business not so long ago. MAC provides personalized poems for special occasions.
Would you buy something like that? Why or why not? I'm curious cause people have told me that it really won't work but yet there are sites that sell poetry on mugs etc. Love M [Edited 12/9/09 0:10am]

if i was really into it, possibly...
i'd rather be given one by someone who cares enough about me, like a lover or something [...i think i can, i think i can, i think i can...]

I probably wouldn't.
I think poetry is a little too intimate to just whim one for whoever the paying client is. Just my view.

I'm sure there's a market for this out there... you just have to find out who they are and how to reach them.
Also good would be for you to print 5 (or so...) of YOUR favorites on a mug or shirt and then sell them on Etsy.com to get your name AND work out there. Then you can also let people know that you also do custom/one-off creations... A working class Hero is something to be ~ Lennon

Personally I wouldn't, poetry being something I never could understand
Can I just say that on your website, the photo of you looks very mysterious, like a fortune teller. Your text is very friendly, forward, open and professional, but your photo almost contradicts that

You look totally gorgeous but possibly intimidating

I'd do it, but not sight unseen. Beauty in verse is so subjective that I'd have to be sure I personally see it before I shelled out my cash. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

And that is the way I work as well, they will see it first. If they don't like it they don't pay the remainder of the balance until it is up to their standard. [Edited 12/9/09 18:15pm]

[Edited 12/9/09 18:15pm] I could maybe get with this arrangement, then. Of course, then you'd need to control for a client simply plagiarizing your stuff. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Thanks hun, I''ll put it in the contract. I have the same problems in my line of work potentially folks can run off with a visual, terminate the contract, or simply never answer my calls again. I'm totally wary of new clients thanks to that having happened to me before

Make sure you register a copyright for any writing you sell, print, put online, etc. Technically once you write it down, it's copyrighted, but if you're ever in a dispute you'll be better off if you have an official copyright from the government. (At least in the US.)
In response to the original question -- most likely, not. I would probably be more apt to buy something with a poem on it. But then you're sort of getting into greeting cards, aren't you? The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
