We've been drug from cars to our deaths which is similar to lynching. People drive by our clubs or known areas and throw bottles, start fights, or even go undercover as someone who is interested in us only to later rob, beat, or kill us. Rednecks gang up in pickups at night sometimes and go on joyrides looking for random gay guys to beat. Try being openly gay and getting a seat on a school bus. It's not a matter of having to sit in the back, any seat that you want to sit in whether it's in the back or the front, some asshole was going to make a stink about it. If we had gotten out in the streets in the 1960s and stood up for our rights, the police would have turned the dogs and hoses on us too. We are also hated by our own race and family members too.

They wanted blacks for work, they just wanted gay people dead.

We've both come a long way and we've both got a long way to go.

SO spot on. The first paragraph is still terrible to read, but so true. I think about how Harvey Milk was harassed, and in San Francisco of all places. I think about Matthew Shepherd who was left for dead. I think about Stonewall. I think about endless stories of gay people being harassed and beyond. Club bombings, murders. To what end? What does it solve?

Whether we're gay, black, both, or whatever...there is not a competition in who has had it worse. I'm tired of celebrating diversity. We've totally forgotten we're in this TOGETHER.

I'll never forget some of my nights out back in the 1990s. It's a wonder if I'm still alive.

The fair was in town and every time the fair came or if there was a concert at the coliseum, that brought a lot of straight people downtown. Otherwise, our downtown area was basically a ghost town after 5:00 p.m. after everyone got off of work except for the two gay clubs downtown and a few straight clubs a few streets over. Anyway, I had just come out of the club and was going to my car. I was standing at the corner in front of the club waiting for the traffic light to change. There was a car sitting at the red light as I got ready to cross the street. I was smoking a cigarette and the girl in the backseat asked if she could get a light. As I approached the car, I noticed that the guy sitting next to her had a gas can. They were going to throw that gas on me as soon as I struck my lighter. I turned around and went back inside the club and came out later.

Many a night, the gangboys used to circle the club. A few times the music would turn off and the lights would come on and all we could hear was shooting coming from the outside. They were shooting at the front window which they eventually bricked in. One night, some fool was standing on the bridge across the street from the club shooting at people as they came out. It was definately not a safe life and this was the early 1990s.
Andy is a four letter word.

so the kid comes home from school today and I have to sign this paper. He had to write "I will not make the gay sign in class" 44 times. So I'm like "what the hell is a gay sign?" and he tells me it's some finger/palm motion but he didn't make the sign, he was just scratching his hand, and then some other kid told on him to the teacher and hmm

So then I asked him what does gay mean (he's 9 tomorrow) and he's all nonchalant "it's when a boy likes a boy" so I guess soon I will have to have a talk with him, and I don't think he's nowhere mature enough to get it but oh well. I am not the one to let other people teach this kid about sex, so he can be even more confused.

So then I'm like why does your techer believe the other kid if she did not see you actually make this sign.....I had to break it down for him again. See when you chronically lie and get in trouble, then no one wants to believe you. It probably wouldn't have been so bad if he hadn't spent the past month getting on his teachers' nerves with not doing his work, and talking out loud and walking and being a little douche, basically, and lying and stealing and getting into as much trouble as possible. We all tried to warn him!

So now he's basically the class liar and class troublemaker. 3rd grade, already having private meetings with the teacher trying to not have him get kicked out over foolishness.

Did you ever think you would hear a teacher say they want to strangle a kid. Well ever person this kid meets eventually tells me they want to strangle this kid.
...

I'm like "me too" sigh

I'm done guessing what a gay hand sign looks like. This kid sounds fascinating! I see politics, sports or reality TV in his future! woot!
