Zap! Cops Taser 10-year-old Boy in Colorado

Police have used a taser on a 10-year-old child in Pueblo, Colorado. Fox 31 from Denver cites Capt. Jeff Teschner and the officer says that he believes the deputies involved were justified in their use of force.


An Associated Press story cites the spokesman as well and Teschner said that the boy was not hurt when deputies took action earlier this week after arriving at his foster home, where he was reportedly destroying property.

When asked why other measures weren't used to subdue the boy Teschner said: "They couldn't get close enough to deploy pepper spray without putting themselves in danger."

The Pueblo Chieftain has details here and notes that Teschner said the department's policy on Tasers is not age specific nor does it mention Taser use on juveniles.

"It's important to use best judgment and consideration anytime you deploy these devices, whether it's an old person or a young person. We followed all our policies and procedures, and I think in this particular instance, (the Taser) was used in an appropriate effect," Teschner said.

That's some quality reporting. Just enough info to piss you off without actually telling you what really happened.

PUEBLO, Colo. — Colorado sheriff's deputies shocked an "out of control" 10-year-old child with a Taser and arrested him.

Pueblo Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Teschner said Wednesday that the boy was not hurt when deputies took action Monday after arriving at his foster home, where he was reportedly destroying property. Teschner says deputies were justified in their use of force. The deputies say the youth threatened them with a pipe and a stick, and threw a piece of wood at them.

The boy was arrested on suspicion of menacing with a deadly weapon.

Last month, a police officer in a small Arkansas town was fired after using a stun gun on an unruly 10-year-old girl, not for using the Taser but for violating department policy by failing to use the camera attached to it.

well he was a foster kid destroying property. obviously he's got some emotional issues or maybe he got hold of some prescription meds. don't agree with the tazering though. but if the cops would have physically subdued him they could have done more damage than the tazer such as break his bones or restrict his breathing. poor kid. lose/lose situation for him.

I don't know. I just don't see how two or more cops couldn't just grab the kid's arms. The 10 yo in my house is small and even I could make him stop acting a fool by grabbing his arm. You know how a father will playfully grab a child's head and hold him there while the child is swinging his fists wildly trying to hit him? You mean to tell em some grown ass, big cops couldn't just pick this kid up by the back of his shirt?

If he's in a foster home maybe he's being abused?? Maybe someone is hurting him and he doesn't know what else to do about it.

Not dissing you at all, just the story. Assuming this 10 year old was supervised or even observed by adults, something happened that was at a level were a supposed rational adult felt the cops needed to be called.

pretty messed up to have to call the cops on a lil kid in the first place.
