New piercings should be cleaned thoroughly twice a day.

Using a mild, low pH antibacterial soap; Lather the piercing and move the jewelry back and forth through the piercing until it slides freely. Rinse the piercing thoroughly under warm running water; working the jewelry back and forth making sure all traces of soap are removed (until you start to feel resistance.)

lol @ triple post!

Instead of anti-bacterial soap, I'm trying the new sea-salt method. It's supposed to be much more gentle, yet just as cleansing as the old way. And it's hysterical!

My instructions are to take 2 coffee mugs and fill them with 8 ounces of warm water. Mix in 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to make a saline (which makes it a .9% solution, which is what is naturally found in our bodies). Lower myself into the cups, enough to create a suction effect, then tilt back up and hold the cups there for 5-10 minutes. The piercer was sure to warn me to make sure no one could walk in on me while doing this as I'd look like an idiot. wink Then clean the "crusties" off with a Q-tip. I was told NOT to touch the jewelry while it's healing, that turning it back and forth only agitates the process. As long as I'm cleaning twice a day, it will be fine.

Considering it took a year for my navel to heal and I was doing the soap thing, I'm excited to see if this way works any better.

My parents tell people to use the soap and the salt if it starts acting funky. BTW navels are the absolute worst piercing to heal. My Mom always tells people to plan on 6 months at least.
