I wish all cds were $9.99

I saw Heather Headley cd for $8.99 and the Vivian Green cd for $9.99. These are suggested retail prices, not a sale price. I really think I would buy more cds if they were all $9.99 a pop. For the artwork, liner notes, royalties, etc, I consider this fair. When i ponder downloading, or throwing out $15 for a cd, i usually download. Some dvds are less than a new release cd?? Why? When I go to a store and ponder buying a new cd that i have never heard by (fill in the blank) or one of my favorite movies on dvd...?

If the companies see that most of the first weeks sales numbers are so HUGE, ie: when the prices are av. $9.99. Why not keep them this price? If I don't buy the cd the first day it's released, i don't bother. My friend bought the Heather Headley cd and gave it as Christmas presents, to friends ($10 a pop) Instead of buying other well known acts at $12-$15 each.

Don't hate me for downloading

Whatever the market will bear, I suppose...and nowadays fewer people are willing to pay $17.99 for a lousy CD.

Remember when VHS movies were $99.99?

Remember when Grafitti Bridge was $89.99? ROFL...

CDs are actually a lot cheaper to manufacture than cassettes, yet the industry seems to think that they are worth twice as much... hmmm...

For real...all movies were $100--the idea of "buying a movie" was new and strange.

This is why I WILL NOT pay $100 for the whatever season of whatever TV show (20 or so episodes or whatever) on DVD. These pieces of crap will be in the bargain bin one day.

Movies used to be that much... this was to promote the rental industry... the rental copies cost $100 or so... if you lost a rental tape, you were fucked!

Indeed, all that's required is a little patience. We're all born with it, just some of choose not to use it.

I really don't remember that at all. I must have been too young or didn't care.

I do remember our first VCR... it was this HUGE silver thing that had these huge buttons that you had to work out in order to push down. The top would make this horrible noise when it came up and then you put the tape in. It was LARGE!

Yes! So did this thing! Which, to me, seemed completely pointless to even have as the cord wasn't all that long. You may as well have just gotten up and worked the thing that way.

So, how much does it actually cost to make a cd? How much profit is actually being made off of the $14.99 cds (meaning those who are signed with a label)?

Something on the order of 25 cents. There are costs involved in producing the music, obviously, but still...

I was one of the first people to plunk down 500 for a compact disc player.

The compact discs started at 49.99 and went up from there, most of them were classical. If you wanted the rare few that were outside of classical, they had to be special ordered and pre-paid! The music store would have like 20 classical CDs in stock.

Ah, yes...I remember it well...

The quality of beta was just awesome. I miss those things. My sister had both a beta and a VHS...beta rocked. I'm not quite sure why it died out. Small and better quality.

Anyone know?

Yes! I worked at a video store while in college and the new vhs movies that came out were all like $99 to own. Thats why people were opening up video rental stores. I remember Dirty Dancing came out at a buying price of $19.99 and people freaked out. Sold hundreds!! This was just in '86, not that long ago.

You also had to pay for memberships to rent movies! And we made you leave a deposit if it was a movie that was stolen or never returned.

My first computer was an Apple IIc. You do have a point there. The software was exclusive, and limited. Selection within the stores were poor, and to have to wait to order from the catalog, well...that was a major bummer.

And the cost of the computers back then. Wow. I paid 2,500 for a computer and color monitor (realize this computer had ZERO perks). I'm not quite sure if my printer was a part of that, but the printer was an Apple Imagewriter (I think), and cost $700!!!

When the very first external floppy drive came out, that cost me another $500!!!

Apple was bleeding me dry back then, by making everything only available through them.

I very seldom ever buy a new cd. I get most of mine at this really cool used cd store in Toronto. The only new stuff I buy is Prince. The rest I get used for under $10.00. I have a fairly large cd selection and I stopped buying new, overpriced cd's years ago. The good used stores have a great selection and most of the time I can get what I want within a few weeks of its release. For example, I got the latest Santana (shaman) for $8 3 weeks after it was released.
