When animal protection goes to far (not related to the awesome kitteh-story)

In the news here today, there was a segment saying that the animal protection ministry (which hasn't existed in its own right for a number of years, it's been outsourced so to speak) has come out with a... umm... just a declaration really, it won't (yet) be passed as a law or something - they say that lobsters need to be in an aquarium for the few hours between they're caught and until they're sold. It's about an average of four hours. The ministry goes on to say that each individual animal should have a tank of its own, with rocks and the like for natural habitat likeness, and no rubber bands on their claws. WTF??? I'm all for animal protection but if this went through, the fish shops would be filled with lobster tanks and the price would soar to even more ridiculous levels than it already is.
I feel that this is the largest pile of shit to come out of this, especially since politicians here refuse to outright outlaw sex with animals because, and get this, "it's hard to know at what point it hurts the animal". I'm highly ashamed of my country for this. disbelief (but that's for another thread)

Thoughts on the lobster issue, please?

Note: There's no point in me linking to this because it's in Swedish and very few would understand it.

that's crazy hmmm

next they'll be saying fishermen will have to get the lobster's permission to be caught in the first place.

"excuse me mr. lobster, do you mind me catching you with my net?"
"not at all! please go ahead!"
"will you any special dietary requirements upon your pre-consumption detainment?"
"well let me think, I've always wanted to try broccoli! and will I have a colour tv in my aquarium?"
"I'm certain that could be arranged! Will Gold plated cutlery be to your satisfaction?"

I know, right? They interviewed a fish shop owner in Gothenburg (booo) and he said flat out "if they make that dumb thing a law I'm not putting any individual tanks in here. So sue me." I think that's the only good thing I've ever heard a west-coaster say. biggrin

On a popular cooking show here they once dispelled the myth that lobsters suffer when thrown into boiling water.

For the squeamish they recommended to put them in the freezer for 5-10mins. which would effectively stun them.

They also provided evidence that lobsters as a species are not too many "branches" removed from the common cockroach.

Ever since that show I've been a lobster-eatin'-muthafunka!! foodnow

what I'm trying to say is "FUCK THAT SHIT!" stoopid ass rule, to say the least!! disbelief

they used to say fish felt no pain, and that was why even Jesus said it was OK to eat fish, but since then they have proven fish feel just as much pain as any mammal

I've heard that about the lobster coming from the same family as cockroaches. This was actually stated on the TBN station. One of those TV evangelist shows. I never liked the taste of lobster anyway, but when I heard about the connection to cockroaches, it made my stomach turn. Gross. lol

falloff Actually the program was already set there when I turned the tv on around 6:30am in the morning, because I was watching a different program the night before. I just happen to catch them talking about that when I turned the tv on, and when I heard them talking about cockroaches related to Lobster, It made me want to throw up. I'm glad I don't like lobster anyway, it just has a funny smell to it. The other type of seafood that I don't touch or eat that makes my stomach crawl when I look at it is "crawfish"...damn if those things don't look like the cockroach's prehistoric cousin with all those creepy-looking legs. lol
