I took a typing class in 7th grade, and it was required for all students. Now this was well before there was any such thing as PC's for all families; in fact, it would be another three years before there were really cheapo PC's from Tandy/Texas Instruments pc and four years before the first Macs came out. mac

I'm 39 years old, and my high school required all students to take typing when I attended. I took a typing class in the ninth grade, and I'm really glad I paid attention. My typing ability alone has gotten me a job or two. cool

I took typing class in 1979 and I sucked at it. I got so frusrated one day that I bent the shit out of the carriage return bar. I bent it back into shape before the teacher could notice. I seem to have a mind that goes faster than my fingers.

You're a little older than me. I graduated in 1985 and we had typewriters with the return key by then instead of the old carriage return. My uncle used to have one of those though and I attempted to type a term paper on it. I got frustrated with it because it really slowed me down every time I got to the end of the page and had to take my hand off the keys to pull the carriage bar back. Then I'd have to look back at the typewriter to make sure I placed my hands back on the right keys. And after all that, I had done lost my place on my handwritten page I was typing from. I gave it up and went to my mother's place of employment and used her typewriter after they closed to do my term paper.

We had to type to the music for "Monty Python's Flying Circus" once in class. It totally fucked me up.

Yep, and it probably was more useful than any class I ever took, except math.

I graduated in 1987 and I took Typing I. It was the best thing I could have done, because it has helped me tremendously throughout the years in getting decent paying jobs. I'm pretty much stuck at 60 wpm, though.

That's good for a male because I've heard that even the best of us type slower than a really good female typist because our fingers are larger. Most males I know who type with some speed type around 40-45 words a minute.

We're the same age. That sounds like a very progressive school you went to since they required everyone to take typing. Hardly any males took it down here back then and it wasn't required either. I guess maybe because this is the South and a lot of males down here went into blue collar jobs back then.

Are you guys talking about typing, like on typewriters? confuse

Or is that what they called keyboarding?

Actually, I was talking about typewriters since computers were very scarce back then and we never knew they were going to catch on especially in homes. Even most businesses had typewriters. I just didn't see many males taking typing back then so I was wondering how many on the org took typing.

But learning on computers is fine too. I'm surprised at some of the responses from the younger orgers when I hear they took typing in elementary school. But it does make sense though since computers are so widespread now that every person will eventually be exposed to one even if it's nothing but for entertainment purposes. I even pay my bills online now and haven't purchased a stamp in years. Pretty soon computers are going to become a necessity. I'm just glad the price has gone down. But the day they become a necessity, internet needs to become free. lol

I guess it stuck because by the time I started using computers my hands automatically knew what to do. biggrin biggrin

I had a hard time adjusting to a computer keyboard because the keys are much more sensitive than typewriter keys. You had to actually press those keys. lol But computers make it so much easier though. I hated pulling out that damn eraser pencil with the little brush on the end of it. I used to erase a damn hole in the paper. And the little liquid paper sheets that would leave white specs on the typewriter roller, not to mention the actual messy liquid paper in the bottle. lol

I'm not sure if 37 constitutes "older," smile but, yeah, I took typing. It wasn't a requirement, though. I took it as an elective the summer before my freshman year.

I doubt that I am considered an older man (29), but I did take typing in middle school in 1993.

In 8th grade, you could take typing for one semester. I did that. In high school, I took typing and computers (BASIC) my Freshman year. Every year after I took another typing or computer course, so I was always exercising my skills. They helped me, and picked up greatly, in the Navy. When I got out of the Navy, I tested at a temp agency. I tested at 98wpm, no mistakes. My 10 key was 14,500 strokes. The average is 7000 I think. Even now, I test at about 9500 on 10-key, and I test at 100 wpm on typing. I love that I have that simple skill. It lets me type as fast as my brain is trying to put stuff out.

I took typing in high school and there were many boys. Harlan Ellison only uses two fingers to type and he can type one hundred words a minute.

First off, I'm a guy, and you know it. So that "she" stuff can be saved for the Pride parade.

Second, despite my harsh tone sometimes, I'm well aware of what I say, and how I say it. I know it rubs people wrong at times, but I'm not here to placate folks. I'm also not here to purposely offend them, or rub them wrong (okay except a COUPLE, but 2 at the most....maybe 3. Okay 4). The world is full of colorful and different folks. I'm proud to be one of those. Take that how ya will. I'm just sayin'. peace
