EXTREME VIOLENCE IN MOVIES

I have to confess that I love extreme violence IN MOVIES but I hate it in real life. I can't even watch a fight between two people. It's saddens me.

Well. I recently watched MARTYRS and INSIDE. They are both French films. They blew me away. The plots were so nuts and out of this world that I totally ate it up. It was kind of refreshing.

Martyrs almost turned out to be a bit much but I held on and ended up loving it.

Inside was crazy!!!!!

Anyone else see this movies?

I haven't seen these but some films go too far.

I remember watching the remake of 'The Hills Have Eyes' a few years ago and the rape scene made a friend of mine throw up (being a rape victim). This kind of thing is sick.

Now HK style blood and guts don't really mean the same thing, though, do they? That doesn't seem to affect people much.

I'm wondering what the remake of Nightmare On Elm Street is going to be like with the Tina on the ceiling scene....

I generally don't go for overly gorey movies, but Martyrs is kind of intriguing me! My brother would love it probably, but he doesn't do subtitles rolleyes
If you will, so will I

I turn my head when scenes are too graphic...so long as the scene is realistic. If it's some crazy Texas Chainsaw shit then I generally don't mind it.

I don't like scenes that rely on the violence to stir an emotion though. In general, I like a more Hitchchock style tension to a scene.

I have a very hard time sitting through torture sequences. It's always been a sticking point with me. I can't even look at the screen if I sense someone is about to be tortured.

I think the scenes that hit me the hardest is when the violence appears to be 'documentary' style, like some of the scenes in Shindler's list or Saving Private Ryan. The out-of-nowhere violence without a moment's warning is risky because there's no tension being built up to the event, but it's very effective cause it looks like how it would happen in real life--without a moment's warning.

As far as the violence in those two films, I probably wouldn't be able to watch it. boxed

I saw Pandorum tonight, and that was like being tortured. nod
Although the main actor, whatever his name is, looks damned good in underwear.

Inside is one of my Top 10 Horror films. I learned about it when it was mentioned on another thread here a while back. That end was straight up shocking by American standards IMO. But the movie was so good throughout that it was justified.

Martyrs I loved as well. Also insane.

We totally have the same taste. highfive

These movies were insane but so original. I can't think of 1 American film that comes even close to the plot and the insanity in both of these films.

Just a warning. These movies aren't like anything that you've seen in the states. Where American film would just stop and not continue a scene, these movies go there.

Yeah, you wouldn't be able to sit through these.

I don't know where my fascination with horror and/or violence in movies came from. I'm a non-violent person. I'm still trying to figure this out.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of rape scenes either. The remake of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT has a crazy rape scene that was hard even for me to watch. IRREVIRSIBLE is even worse. Then again. I loved both of those movies.

People argue that they should be in films so it "remains a topical issue" which I think is pretty disgusting also. I agree it should be talked about but films like 'Boy's Don't Cry' are where scenes like this belong, not in horror or slasher flicks. Just my opinion. It truly sickens me because you just know there's someone out there enjoying watching it shake

Boys don't Cry was amazing
Before the movie, I didn't understand transgender people.

I felt like I was being brutalized during the rape scene.

Then afterwords, when Swank's character was being interviewed, she/he couldn't even utter the words "my vagina" and broke down in tears. It was at that very instant I understood that being transgender didn't mean you're delusional... It meant you're stuck in a body that is not the one you should be in. I couldn't imagine having to wake up everyday knowing there was a vagina between my legs, but also knowing that I'm "Dan the man.". I totally 'got' transgender people after that.

So yeah--that was an effective use of violence.

PanthaGirl

I can handle violence fine in movies which include torture and violence (Hostel, Salo, American Psycho, American History X etc) but I'm not a big fan of possession (Exorcist, Emily Rose, Amityville II, Evil Dead etc) I find it disturbing because of the pschological/paranormal affects it has on the victims and those around them so I prefer not to watch them especially alone or at night. It's a little frightening. As for rape in film (Irreversible, Higher Learning, The Accused, Fear etc) it's a little disturbing but I can watch it with ease.

We'll be screamin and hollarin at the tv! omfg

The worst/hardest for me to handle violent scene on film would probably be the Fire Extinguisher scene in IRREVERSIBLE. Lawd, that one took it out of me.

OMG!!! Totally! That is the most realistic scene I have ever seen on film.

Did I mention before that the penis they show after the rape scene is CG. They were too kind to that horrible rapist.

I cheated. I figured I'd not be able to get tix at the TIFF, so I went digging online 'til I found a streaming promo copy. (Though I absolutely plan to pay for the theatrical release.)

Um... I'll just say it packs... a punch. And know what? As graphic as certain scenes are, half of the anxiety isn't in what we actually see, but simply knowing this director is crazy enough that we could see something SEVERELY TORE UP at any minute!! shake Made me want to go watch several hours of Mr. Rogers afterward to decompress. lol

Somebody reviewed this movie and said "This director's hate for his own mother drived him to punish the women in his movies". But he(the director) did admit of going through severe depression spills during the process of this film(which explain why it was so grotesque.

Look for my orgnote in a sec.
