Shinnecock Pow Wow 2009 pics *updated w/ videos* Took the family to the Pow Wow in Southampton again this year.
It was a bit less organized than last year, and they didn't have the announcer/MC that was there the past 2 years (funny and kept things interesting) but we all had a great time. Got there about 11:00AM in time to get a good spot to park our chairs & blanket. We stayed until 9-ish in the evening when it got too chilly (we should've brought more blankets!). Here's some of the pics that I took.Enjoy; Getting set shopping at the craft booths before the start of the festivities the Aztec dancers started things off an 87 year-old member (and former Chief for 30 years) of the Shinnecock Nation gave a speech on his life in the reservation Flag of the Shinnecock Natin the Noon procession begins members of the Shinnecock Nation lead the way, followed by various members of Nations from across the continent who came to the Pow Wow they all go on the stage/patform and circle around a fire I'll post more later so that I don't crash the Org with my huge-ass photos-! If you'll notice, most have numbers on them. They compete in different dance categories where their movements AND outfits are judged. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory! | |

They have numerous stands throughout with native foods. I had "Indian Tacos" which are; chili (either meat or veggie), cheese, lettuce & tomato on a frybread. I also had some frybread with warm, sweetened blueberried & powdered sugar on top. Next year I may gather the nerve to try venison or buffalo. I won't be trying the turtle soup though. The pictures are fabulous. I usually go every year but I didn't have a car this time so I missed most of my powwows. There's one in Rancochas N. J. that I'm hoping to get to in October!
