but chicken pox and whooping cough....I'll risk the vaccine side effects. HPV is highly contagious, and transmitted even between people who are using condoms. If people expect their daughters to avoid HPV, they are ignorant. To not vaccinate them and protect them against CANCER out of some puritanical abstinence-only bullshit would also be ignorant. People have forgotten how awful the diseases are that we vaccinate against, and as parents don't vaccinate their kids (based on rumors with no scientific basis), we see the diseases coming back. The autism link is bullshit. It has been discredited multiple times. Any kid who starts showing symptoms of autism is likely to have had a vaccine in the not-too-distant past, because kids get vaccinated frequently. Kids also drink soda frequently. Did your kid drink soda before they started showing symptoms? OMG SODA CAUSES AUTISM! Frankly, if you allow your child to drink soda, but don't vaccinate them, I think you're nuts. The soda is an actual threat to their health, seriously! "What's 'non-sequitur' mean? Do I look it up in a Fag-to-English dictionary?"

if you have to worry about your 11 year old catching HPV and cancer, you have bigger problems. Vaccinate at 18-21, yes. Vaccinating 11-12 year olds, sad.
and for the most part I don't let the kid drink soda....

Welcome to the real world. Five of my daughter's friends already have babies and my daughter is 14.

Don't care what you think you've taught your child, you can't wager your kid's health on her being abstinent until she's 18-21. That's not realistic. "What's 'non-sequitur' mean? I think that it should also be taken into account that having the disease is worse. What is not as severe for one child may be just as worse for another. And I think that we must also understand that these are communicable diseases and can be passed on to others. Several of these diseases such as mumps, Haemophilus influenzae type b, pneumococal disease (which I can't pronounce ) all cause Meningitis-another disease that people can die from in days. Rubella causes birth defects and mental retardation, heart disease within the womb if the mother is infected. And once a person catches these diseases you can't turn around and get a shot for it.

seeing as I was a young teenage girl, I get that.
at the same token advocating not vaccinating your kids against diseases that can kill them and then advocating vaccinating against a preventable disease is very ignorant.... and yes I've known teenage mothers and teenage girls with genital warts and HPV. Do the vaccine or not, but you STILL need to educate your young women. I seriously hope you don't think it's a good thing for a 13 yr old to be pregnant or have an STD, and I hope you don't think a vaccine is a quick fix when there is still HIV/AIDS. I can't educate a 2 yr old on how not to get chickenpox...

I think its an attempt to be condescending and passive aggressive at the same time In that case: No one here has not educated their teenaged daughters on sex and STDs. Where the fuck anyone gets the idea that anyone here thinks it's a good thing for a 13 year old to get pregnant or have an STD is beyond me. And who the hell said a vaccine was a quick fix?

I agree with some of those.
It is worth asking: Why is it that the vaccinated are afraid of the un-vaccinated? But at least some states allow parents to reject them based on philosophical grounds. If most people are vaccinated and if the shots are effective then there is protection in that alone. If you do not get it then you are less likely to be able to give it to me. Seriously, that may be one of the stupidest things I've read on the org. 18 months ago I was in Zambia, where all of the above (and more!) run rampant. There is no mass immunisation system. The result? Hundreds of babies die of Whoping cough. The streets of Lusaka are littered with kids who are crippled from Polio.... Do you want me o go on? I'm all for freedom of speech, and everyone has the right to do as they wish, particularly with their own kids. But this kind of propaganda is dangerous. When parents decide not to vaccinate their kids, it also has implications for the community at large. In a community in Sydney, a small outbreak of Whooping Cough, which has already claimed one babie's life, has been directly attributed to the extremely low immunisation rates of that community. So if you decide to abstain, you're not just risking the health of your own child, but potentially everyone else's.
