I thought it was Tarantino's best job of story telling yet.
Loved, loved, loved the movie. Later Cause tomorrow is taking too long
and yesterday's too far away and the reality that you believe in begins to bind.

I'm committing a cardinal sin here by disucssing this but: that was the funniest fuckin line because they disussed how he and the other basterd knew enough Italian to escort the actress and not get caught. The whole mission hinged on them getting this right. And here this fool is with that constipated look on his face throughout the ordeal and his one line of Italian is 'arrevaderci'..in a hick accent STILL! lmao . [Edited 8/27/09 15:31pm]

It's a movie whose various individual parts are far better than the sum of its those parts.
The acting was great and the atmosphere was superb, but I was very disappointed, considering everyone I knew was saying it was the best Terentino movie. (although this may very well be true even if I didn't love the movie as I don't care for Quinton's movies. ) I agree with the critics that Pitt's character was one dimensional, but if you've ever been in the military (and I have ) and had a First Sergeant or drill instructor from the south with the same swagger (and again, I have) you'd truly appreciate how Pitt hit the nail on the head with this character. All he needed to do was wear taps on his shoes and I would have sworn Sgt. Brophy (one of my drill instructors) was on screen SPOILER ALERT I loved the bar room scene that ends with poor baby Maximillian never being able to see pops again. Everything about that scene was excellently crafted. I HATED the use of screen text to identify individuals and add a dimension of camp to the film. It almost derailed my enjoyment of the film . Also, the final scene was barbaric and I was proud of Americans in the audience for not cheering while the Germans were being slaughtered. I'm not sure what the director had in mind for this scene but indiscriminately shooting into an audience and the almost cartoonist manner in which the violence was treated didn't settle well with me. This is a movie whose strengths rely on the strength of it's actors, the use of tension and suspense, and superb visuals--none of which pull together to create a 'great' movie. It falls just short of that. But, I'm not a great judge of Terentino films--I mildy liked Pulp fiction, and didn't care for Kill Bill 1 or 2.

It was really stylish, but it basically was a movie with no story. It was, at best, a 22 minute TV show plot. The stunt with the girl on the car was really damn impressive, though! You hit the nail on the head!!! Some scenes were great--some more drawn out than needed (even if you're trying to build suspense), but the movie really had no engaging plot. It just felt like a movie struggling to be a movie. And what's up with that stupid pop up text crap? Was he trying to do a kung fu movie?

The movie didn't go ANYTHING like I thought it would, and I'm disappointed because I'm a huge Tarantino fan. It was really non-linear storytelling, and at times it draaaaagged on, I couldn't understand what some parts had to do with the movie at all, it flew off in a bunch of directions. It kinda seemed like there were 3 types different stories going on in one film, and in the end, they didn't connect to each other. What I thought was going to happen was that Shoshanna was going to know about the basterds and end up joining them and killing that Nazi that came to her parents house. What was the point in her meeting that young officer? I didn't get it. I HATE that she had to die the way she did, I didn't think that was fair. I literally screamed "NOO!!!" at the screen but, her revenge was one of the coolest scenes I've ever seen in a movie. I thought there was going to be a LOT more action...I wanted to see undercover Jewish chicks with guns and bombs with the basterds going after the nazis. I thought that Holler guy was gonna be a cool as character, he kinda was but that wasn't emphasized like I wish it was. That tavern scene could've been SO much shorter...I almost walked out on that part...I thought the actress would've been a cooler character...why did the characters I liked in this movie all die? Sheesh...I tell you what though, that bear jew guy LIT HITLER'S FACE UP with that gun! Ouch! Did ya'll see that shit? I really didn't like it. I also could've done with the "Chapter ''", when it seems like they were just inserted randomly into the movie. The thing is, that this seemed to me like Kill Bill, just set in WWII...Blonde chick survives a massacre and goes to get revenge...even though this movie was written way before Kill Bill came out, Maybe if I would've seen it before Kill Bill I could've enjoyed it more. MAYBE.

MAYBE. I think the problem with revenge movies for me is that they make us cheer for the character as his or her humanity is being chipped away by his own acts of barbarism no matter how 'justified' they are in our minds. Watching jews exact revenge on the nazi's in the manner that nazi's would have done didn't settle well with me. To me, a story of a jew being done wrong, and finding a way to hold the nazi accountable, and building a compelling and very tense story leading up to the eventual vindication of the crime would have been a far better film. But the jews in this movie are one dimensional vigilantes--hell, one beats a man into a pulp with a bat while others watch the bloodsport for pleasure. Of course, this is a pop culture film, in a universe where Hitler meets his doom in a French movie cinema , so suspension of disbelief was required to say the least But the colonel gets to walk, he gets a house in Nantucket, and for his atrocities (and killing of the girl's family) he gets scar on the forehead? A scarlet letter that we never get to know how it affects him? That's not justice But I don't think the director had any of this in mind when making the film. He was probably just making a pop culture film, and he put all of his love in the style and other surface level embelishments while an essentially gutted story languishes to that. It's testament to Tarentino's (I know I keep spelling it in various ways ) ability to immerse us smack dab into the middle of any scene regardless of how choppy the plot is, and make that scene seem like the most important in the movie. It's just a damn shame the movie was so meh. [Edited 8/30/09 14:13pm]

I need it explained to me. Were we supposed to see the Jews as Nazis on some level or something? Or becoming what the hate? Was the movie about Shoshanna getting revenge, or Jews killing Nazis? And what movie was Brad Pitt in?

I just thought Tarantino wanted to re-write history to make it more appealing to him. The Jews weren't victims but bad*ss men not to mess with. And no Nazi survived.
