Seriously folks, I ain't kidding.

How hard is it gonna be for me (an Aussie) to LIVE and WORK in NYC?? I will apply for a Working Visa. Honestly I don't care if I'm a bum, I just wanna be where it's at!!! I'm gonna work my arse off until June next year to save enough cash to get my arse outta here.

What neighbourhood would you recommend to live, keeping in mind the price range and the fact I'm a clueless foreigner? Where's cool to eat?

How easy will it be to get a waitressing/cafe/bartender/shopkeeper job? I'm not looking to begin my career in NYC, I just want to experience something different and live a little for atleast a year. And I need a part-time job to support my habit (fun times).

I was planning to register for the Green Card Lottery, but I think I'm too late. Bummer

Are you unhappy in Melbourne? So many people would like to trade places with you.
I think NYC is one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Expensive - I can deal with. I have lived in Europe and the rent was ridiculously high, but I managed. Melbourne is pretty damn expensive too, especially in the city.

The funny thing is , so many people here in Europe want to go to Australia, and even Americans are leaving the USA in order to live in Europe or Australia, yet you want to live in NYC. But I can relate to your situation, I have the same urge to go and live elsewhere for a while. I already checked out some countries but haven´t found my final destination yet. Latin America and parts of the Caribbean are nice but either very dangerous or too expensive or both, and the job situation is a bit difficult.
If I wanted to live in the USA , I´d rather go where it´s sunny and warm but I have been wanting to spend at least a month or two in NYC for some years now. I should go and do it.

I´m just afraid I´d put on a lot of weight there.
They obviously have some interesting food in NYC.
I´m sure some of the NYC orgers can help you a bit.

I remember watching an episode of "Ellen".(she was shootong in NY) ..she had to find the person with the smallest apt in NYC...It was like a walk in closet & the rent was INSANE..but they actually liked it..said it was "cozy"

I would love to visit..but cant imagine living there...unless I had big bucks~~

I can relate. I'd love to live in New York, but I'm sure I could not afford it on my own...besides, I'd probably get lost in the subway and end up living down there, talking to the rats

you might need to pawn that soul to live in NYC' that's for sure. I can't say I did not love groeing up in the city, with all the different people and things to do and the freedom to just say and do how you please.

But I also feel a little claustrophobic when I go visit....and it is really fast paced and dirty.

It truly depends on what field your trying to get into ... it would be best to live somewhere near to where you plan to work, as far as work some areas are doing well with the economy,others not so much choose wisely.

If you're coming here to NYC, make sure you have a TON of money, and a thick skin, or you'll be longing for home in no-time flat.
