Saw the midnight showing.

It was really really good. Unfortunately, I read critic reviews of it so I knew the storyline already. I probably should have not done so, cause there are parts of the story that are better off not revealed before watching the movie.

A couple of things VERY SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT BELOW

I found the policy of 'aborting' larva to be very reminiscent of some of Hitler's final solution policies, and there were very definite political statements being made by the film.

Also, I found the concept of a stranded alien ship on earth for 20 years without reinforcements arriving to be a bit odd. These creatures are very advanced and they should have been able to send some kind of a signal back to their planet. It just didn't make sense. But then again, the story isn't really about THOSE details--it's a metaphor for our own treatment of ourselves really, so it's a detail I let slide pretty easily.

The 'bad guys' are a bit one dimensional. It seems like the main aliens are the only ones that display a full range of emotions---in other words, they're the most human in the movie. I wonder if this was deliberate.

Overall, probably one of the best sci-fi movies to come out in a long, long time. One that attempts to do more than just dazzle with special effects.

thumbs up!

I do not find that odd. They are still bound by physics. If we assume no faster than light travel or communications are possible, then even at light speed it could easily take more than 20 years for a rescue.

Actually, even with conceivable ion drives, it would take 4,000 years to get from here to our nearest star, and that's approaching the speed of light. That part I get.

But the alien specifically tells Vickus (SPOILER ALERT) that he will be back in 3 years time. This means it will take 1.5 years to get to his home planet using their technology. And thus, 1.5 years back.

Hence my finding the 20 years odd.

Saw it last night. It is indeed excellent, as the story serves as an allegory for the political and racial dissonance of South Africa (and really, the world as a whole).

Sooooo good and so funny in parts.

What I loved is that if you see all the trailers for the movie, you still have no clue what goes on in the movie. Awesome.

How cute was the little guy?

I say it was intentional. But I don't think it was only the aliens showing a range of emotions.
The corporation was about business, emotion and business don't go together . . .

We don't know why the ship lost power, so it may not have been able to send a signal home.
I thought this is a great sci-fi movie that will become a classic.

Very political on a lot of levels.
Notice the victims of apartheid, advocating similar policies for a new 'other.'
I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Actually yes. Ok, well not all. But I'll check it out see if something is as bad as I suspect.
If a movie is rated lower than 20%, I've repeatedly found it's not worth seeing at the theater.
I don't see movies based on how they are rated though. I knew 'Transformers 2' and 'G.I. Joe,' were trash going in but they were fun. 'Terminator: Salvation,' wasn't even fun.
If I like a movie, I could care less what it's rated on RottenTomatoes or anywhere else. I don't expect the wave that floats my boat to lift all boats. My taste and attractions are allowed to be unique to me, regardless . . . of course that's just referring to my taste in movies, not life in general . . .
