As an artist I'm sure your used to all kinds of critiques so this should roll off your back. I wouldn't pay it any mind. Just keep doing what your doing. to each its own.
Critiques roll off my back. I take notes on what I find helpful, but that's about it. What I'm hung up on is that the critique is about an important component of my work. Everyone doesn't have to like my imagery, but all you have to do is look at my website (which he did in detail before signing me) to know that that scale is the norm for me. It's kind of like critiquing Picasso (not comparing myself) for painting facial features in odd places on the face. Or Keith Haring for not painting enough facial features in his figures. It's what they do. More so, I almost feel (and again this could just be me) that it was kind of an unprofessional way to put it, considering you're an agent dealing with someone you're starting a professional relationship with. especially an art agent

He clearly isn't well versed in the visual arts then
I would simply reply with yet another copy of your artist statement reiterating your use of larger women. I wouldn't say anything else but "Please review my artist statement for further explanation." And explain to him, firmly, that you wouldn't ever consider changing your style for the possibility of better marketing, so he should consider not bringing it up to you again, if he wants this relationship to work. I used to get this all the time from professors. You just have to find a smart/sharp way of saying fuck you, without actually saying "Fuck you." Fuck you edit. [Edited 8/5/09 21:56pm] I completely agree. I like your reply better , but I sent this earlier: I may try my hand at some thinner more delicate ones NOT but no women I paint are usually delicate. They are generally thick and voluptuous in the Leger/Botero manner. The other ones you picked were all thick also. And attached these pics of "thicker" gals he'd already picked: [Edited 8/5/09 22:16pm]

It's just that I'm usually never willing to bastardize my art in the name of opinion or personal preference. And the subject's come up often - not necessarily for marketing purposes, but for aesthetic reasons. And I'm really stubborn My work stays my work. Perhaps it's not too smart, being very young and very small in the game, but it's been working thus far I still take criticism, I often really thrive on it, but when it comes to something like this? I'm a brick house. [...i think i can, i think i can, i think i can...]

I'm a brick house. No you are correct. I am too. This took me by surprise. I mean I'm not afraid of my work being considered "commercial" as long as it's my work. I'm not someone who does much to do with commission. I'm willing to work with a theme (if it interests me ) as long as my style remains my style. He signed me based on my portfolio. How you gonna ask me something different now?
