R.I.P. "First Black Supermodel" Naomi Sims

The New York Times reports that model Naomi Sims died on Saturday at age 61. The cause of death was cancer.

Sims was considered the "first black supermodel" for appearing on the cover of Ladies Home Journal in November 1968, a time when African-American models were few and far between. She subsequently modeled for designers like Halston, Fernando Sánchez, Teal Traina, and Giorgio di Sant'Angelo. She also appeared on many other magazine covers, and two images-- a 1969 cover of LIFE and a 1967 New York Times fashion magazine over--are on display in the Metropolitan Museum's "The Model As Muse" exhibit.

After five years, Sims retired from modeling and started a multimillion-dollar wig-making business that specialized in designs for black women. Sims also penned at least five books on beauty and modeling.

Naomi Sims, the first black supermodel, died of cancer Saturday in Newark at age 61, the New York Times reports.

Sims broke barriers when she made the cover of Ladies Home Journal in 1968 — becoming the first black model to do so on a mainstream women’s magazine.

It was a defining achievement for the “Black is Beautiful” movement at the time – and Sims went on to appear on the covers of Life, Cosmopolitan and Essence.

Raised in Pittsburgh, she came to New York at age 18 to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology and hit the pavement to jump-start her own modeling career. She became a successful runway walker for big-time designers like Halston and landed a TV campaign for AT&T alongside two other models, one white and one Asian, says the Times.

Upon retiring from catwalking, she started her own business making wigs for African American women after noticing a lack of products available on the market. She later expanded her business to include cosmetics and fragrances, and wrote advice novels, including “How to be a Top Model” and “All About Health and Beauty for the Black Woman,” published in 1986.

Today, two photographs of Sims hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “Model as Muse” exhibition.

She is survived by her son Robert, her daughter, Betty, and her granddaughter.
