What's the most surprising thing you found out about a friend . . .

. . . you thought you knew a lot about???

I'm talking to one of my best friends on the telephone yesterday and we're discussing her beauty pageant days back in da day (she was Miss Georgia and a fourth runner up for Miss USA) and while we're laughing about that she casually mentions that she won Star Search 10 times in the spokesmodel contest. omg Growing up in the 80s Star Search was a MAJOR deal and I'm actually oddly impressed by this feat. Hell, even Beyonce couldn't win Star Search. lol

So tell us something you found out about a friend that took you aback. biggrin

I found out that my mother was in a civil rights group at her church when she was a teenager. She was to go down south and protest with her group but my grandmother got scared and wouldn't let her. My mother is a laid back type of person and I'd never visualized her as being active in such a way.

spit The visual is priceless.

I have an ex who's a former Marine that did secret ops, is a body builder, rides motorcycle, your typical "man's man" yet he has the largest stuffed animal collection I've EVER seen. He doesn't have any furniture in his living room because that's where the stuffed animals are kept. omg

A few years ago, a coworker told me over the phone that he was repeated sexually assaulted by a male choir director over a period of years. He had never told anyone about it before. He said he was ashamed to tell anyone. I was floored. I felt so sorry for him. The man that raped him was in the local news at the time for being a multiple offender of children and teens.

Harlepolis

One of my friends sang Imagination for Ella Fitzgerald(who was a close friend of her family).

Ms.Ella asked for this lil' 5 years old girl to sing for her in their living room,,,,and she has the video to prove it love Ella even sang along with her and her father begged her(Ella) to sing a hillbilly song,,,,which she did lol

She also made a living briefly singing jingles for radio stations/commercials,,,,but she doesn't intend to sing professionally since she's in law school now.

Ok, so seriously, probably finding out my friend had previously been married to my now wife. It wasn't a big deal (he became my friend by at the time we met being married to my wife's (then gf) older sister - yeah, he moved from one to the other) but I'm thinking it's probably quite a surprising thing in theory so fits this thread. We're friends still though, 7 years later. It never really was an issue. His subsequent break-up from my wife's sister was a bit more problematic. lol

I know you guys. I was heartbroken. There seemed to be nothing that I could think of to say to him besides "Im so sorry that happened to you". Its the saddest thing anyone has ever told me. I'll always remember that.

I had a very close girlfriend who was engaged to her fiance for several years tell me and the rest of our crew that her and dude had already gotten married . . . three years ago! whofarted

I can understand if she didn't want to make a big deal about it but she was telling us a date for the wedding, describing our bridesmaids dress, and going to bridal shows with her best friend of 25 years (and dind't even tell her) knowing full well her ass was already married. Furthermore, she didn't tell us on purpose, she kinda let it slip to another friend. Who does that???? At least I didn't have to spend money on a shower and wedding gift. shrug

Yes. At the time he was being charged with a decade's worth of charges which is what prompted my friend to confide in me that he was one of his victims as well. As far as I know, he is currently in prison.

Besides the friends who ultimately took their own lives...

hmmm

Was floored, when a then-married buddy of mine told me that he'd been having affairs with other men. Was as seemingly straight as you'd ever see.
