What year did people stop wearing flares and ditched afros for Jheri Curls (1st time around, not popular revivals

I am always curious that when I see a 70s video or photo of a group in the 70s, they always have flares, bright sparkly clothes and big ass afros (Black) and perms/shaggy hippy hair (white) but by 1980 the flares go and the hair is toned down so by 1982, anyone in the 70s look, just looks out of place.
Are there any old orgers here, or anyone who knows why flares and big hair went out of fashion and the drainpipe/ levis and shorthair croptop/ mullet/jheri curl look came in by 1984. I just find it interesting. Does anyone have photos of flares and afros etc or transistional fashions
So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

I'm sure somebody out there has written their thesis on something like this lol

I'm willing to bet that they went from one thing straight to another without a transitional "style" although for a time there would have been folks with either style around. Just like my dad wouldn't stop wearing his wide legged pants suit in the 80s even though we told him not to confused

As far a I recall, 1982 was the advent of the jheri curl. Micheal Jackson´s Thriller, Full Force and their debut album and "Alice" video, Midnight Star and their "Planetary Invasion" album from 1983...those were great days that I still miss a lot, especially as I get older.

The Jacksons kept their afros and flares up to the 1979 Destiny tour. But by 1980 the afros have been toned down a lot into more natural shapes on their Triumph and the sparkly flares they wore in the Destiny tour are still there on the 81 tour, but someone has tapered the flares into drainpipes.
Even Prince turned the afro into a coiffure in 1979 and then cut his real short in 1980. The only group to persist with the old look for a while was Kool and the Gang, you will notice one of them has a bright red pimp suit with wide ass flares in their 1981/82 "Get Down on it" video
