Currently studying:

Applied Communications Bachelor's of Public Relations, minors in Philosophy and Psychology.

Second year.

No scholarship, no grant. Student line of credit. I don't even qualify for government assistance, because by their standards, my parents make too much money. Not that this helps, because they don't pay for squat. Also, because I am not an ethnic minority in any sense, nor am I female, I don't qualify for those subsidies either. The system works!

What subsidies are those? Daym I wish somebody would've told me about them when I was in school. Would've saved me some money.

Well, I first got a Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University (at the main campus in Bloomington) in 1998. My major was political science, and I did a minor in philosophy. Other areas of study for me included French and human sexuality, and of course, I had to meet various distribution requirements.

I had no scholarships or grants, but because my dad is on the faculty, I was eligible for "fee courtesy": I could attend for 50% of the normal in-state tuition rate. In fact, my room and board cost more than my tuition. And my parents paid for it anyway.

IU isn't Harvard or Yale, but I think it was a pretty good deal: I got a degree from a respected, well-known university (even if it's best known for its basketball program) at a low price.

After I graduated and worked for a year, I enrolled at the Indiana University School of Law--Indianapolis, which is totally separate from IU's better-known law school in Bloomington. I graduated with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 2002. There are no "majors" in law school (or at least not at most law schools, including mine). Aside from the required classes, I primarily chose my classes by looking at the subjects tested by the Indiana Bar Examination. Beyond that, I just chose classes that sounded interesting, were at convenient times (e.g., no 9 a.m. classes), or taught by professors I liked. Also, once I started working part-time as a law clerk, I tried to set up my schedule so that I'd have at least one day per week with no classes at all.

I had no scholarships or grants for law school either, and my parents didn't pay a dime--we had always had an understanding that they would pay for college, but I would have to pay for any graduate school. (I have two younger brothers, and my parents obviously wanted to put them through college too.) So, I mainly financed my law degree with student loans, working at a law firm as a law clerk, and occasionally using my credit cards to get me through temporary money shortages. Also, when I started law school, I moved in with my fiancée (we got married a year later), so I was able to reduce my living expenses somewhat.

While statistics might show this trend, I don't agree with this either. And even ethnic minorities are discriminated against in the business environment, it's not a valid reason to discriminate persons such as myself in the educational environment.

Besides, if I have to drop out because I can't afford my schooling, well, I don't think I'll run much at all.

feelin like a tiny shrimp in this sea of fancy degrees

But, I just finished off a 2 year A.A.S. degree in Computer Programming at the Minneapolis Community and Technical College.

I have to say that although it doesn't compare to the others, I worked very hard to do in 2 years. I've a daughter and am single. I didn't even take Summers off. I am happy it is over.

I did it on a few merit scholarships, grants, and still had to take out loans to get by. Worked too.

If I could have swung it, I really wanted to get an 4-year in MIS, but...that's really out of the picture for now.

I completely agree. There are many ways to succeed in this life, and most have nothing to do with school. I've learned more out of school than in school. LaVisHh, you obviously have a lot to be proud of, so hold your head high. We all learn from your insights here, as I'm sure your daughter does at home with you.

Me too! BA Joint Hons in Literature and Philosophy from UEA...

My folks "earned too much" for me to qualify for any extra grants too but I worked hard during the holidays and my dad had been saving for me and my sisters to go from when we were babies. Would love to do an MA in Literature but have to work instead! Loved studying and loved the life.

I agree... I'm not sure I really learned that much from my college classes. While my B.A. diploma is displayed in my office, it's mostly there to decorate the walls. It means almost nothing to me. (Didn't the tour guides during the 2000 Celebration say that Prince feels the same way about his gold and platinum records on the walls at Paisley Park?)

During my college years, I probably learned more outside of class (mostly about life in general) than I did in the classroom.
