But I will add that the only way to travel by train is to have a private room.

Tokyo to Hiroshima and back, 3 months ago. about 4 or 5 hours one way. it was the longest train trip of my life but it was nothing compared to the flight to Japan. everyone's a fruit & nut case

I took the train from Amsterdam to Budapest and loved it. It was a convenient and easy way to see so much more than if I had flown. In America, I've taken the train from NYC to Providence and NYC to Montreal. Both were incredibly lovely trips. Especially in the quiet car or anywhere you don't have to deal with anybody on a cell phone.

I've taken the train back and forth from Chicago to Salt Lake City a couple of times.
It's really beautiful from Denver to Salt Lake City. I really loved travelling that way. Haven't traveled by train in about 10 years though. [Edited 7/27/09 12:49pm] I'm firmly planted in denial

I'd really like to take the train somewhere! It seems like a lot of fun, and more relaxed than flying If you will, so will I

PDogz said: KidaDynamite said: oh HELL NO!!! LOL, no really. The people you meet, the little out of the way places you stop in, the things you see, THE THINGS YOU DO, lol. Which goes back to: THE PEOPLE YOU MEET, lol. Every town we stopped off in, even if we only had 30 minutes, I'd jump off the train, go outside the station, grab the nearest newspaper, find the nearest bar within 2 blocks, order a Black Russian, then take a minute to drink my drink, skim through the paper, while vibing with whoever (...or sometimes WHATever) was there in the bar, before jumping back on the train to speed off to the next stop. Some places even had longer layovers, like when we hit Chicago I had about 2 hours to kill. So along with my regular routine, I found the elevated subway, rode around a couple of stops before returning back to the Amtrak station, even had enough time to walk around the city a bit, and it was like 3:30 AM!!!. It was great fun, but boy did I have nerve, lol. It also helped that serval nights of that trip, I had access to a sleeping car with a shower. Some of those Amtrak trains are way-comfy! Complete with bar cars and dining cars. Essentially, it was a 5 day party as the Nation swept past your windows (several cars complete with sun/moon roofs.). That sounds really cool but see I'm not too adventurous on my own, so if that was me every time we made a stop I would find a bench to sit on or walk up the block somewhere and back. That would take up a good 10-15 mins. surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water

My longest train trip was overnight from Paris to Berlin. Kind of weird sleeping with everyone on an overnight train (you know what I mean ).

I did the Trans-Siberian Railway back in 1995: Moscow-Vladivostok, 5,800 miles, 6 days, caught up with all my college reading list, and slept like a baby with the train's gentle rocking:)
+ in Europe of course, the train is one of the main means of transport, more so than in the US I think.

Actually I haven't seen it... so I can't compare - which mind you would be an interesting exercise:) But I do remember reading a review of it back when it came out. My vague recollection of it is that it was quite full of stereotypes about Russia/Russians. No breaking news here about a Western production:)

Have you seen it? Yes, I have. Being a typical Westerner that has never been to Russia, I have no idea whether the Russian characters were authentic or not. The overall story was pretty good about two Americans that accidentally get involved with drug smugglers and the KGB agents that are pursuing them on the Transsiberian.

Thank you for the synopsis, setonseven, I will try to get it on dvd. And then I can tell you if the Russian characters are stereotypes or not.

I love the train! I've been from Toledo to Newport News many times when I lived in Michigan (yes, I had to drive down to Toledo). About a month ago, I went from Richmond to Tampa.
