A lot of my closest friends are women. I love them and they love me and sex isn't even an issue (with a couple of exceptions.) It's great, women rock!

Sure men and women can be best friends without sex being involved. Once best friends of the opposite/same sex then it messes up the friendship and things between you will never be the same again.

I don't think that men and women can be lifelong friends, but friendship is possible for short periods.

Friendships between the sexes tend to end when one person find a lifemate or a boy/girlfriend (who often doesn't understand) or one friend will start having feelings for the other friend which of course will eventually end the friendship.
