The Des Moines, teenager is the new LG U.S. National Texting Championship winner. She beat out 20 other finalists from around the country on Tuesday and takes home $50,000 for her speedy and accurate texting.

Over two days, Moore outperformed other contestants at challenges such as texting blindfolded and texting while maneuvering through a moving obstacle course.

In the final showdown, she beat 14-year-old Savannah, Ga., resident Morgan Dynda. Both girls had to text three lengthy phrases without making any mistakes on abbreviations, capitalization or punctuation.

Every one of the contestants got a question wrong. None of them knew that PAW is text-speak for "parents are watching."

i often start to text and then give in and phone. it is quicker.

If I get a text from someone (rather than a call), I just assume they're someplace where talking on the phone isn't possible and text back.

I usually do not text at all

If I want to say something or talk - I call

I've had people tell me "I texted you like 50 times!!! Why were you being shady?!"

...Umm, I have texts blocked on my phone, so if anyone really wants me, I need a phone call

Texting should be done for 3 reasons:

1 - To give/get directions
2 - To drop a hello or term of endearment "just because"
3 - To say either Yes or No

All this conversation shit is re-fuckin-diculous. Don't ask me "What did you do today?" "what did you think about the movie?" - Just call me, muthafucka!

I had a roommate for a minute and we would be in our rooms which were next to each other, both watching separate tv's and we'd text back and forth.
It's still our usual method of communication.

It depends.
If I know they're to busy to talk then it's just a fun game we play. It's like twitter updates but direct to a friend or small group of friends.

If I know they're not busy, and I get texted from them, I assume it's a form of avoidance.

I do it all the time, cause sometimes I don't want a 5 minute phonecall taking 2 hours--which can happen when you talk.

But I hate receiving anything important through text. Pick up the damned phone and call. It's like texting has become and extension of many folks inclination towards conflict avoidance.

I have a friend who is on the poverty line, she can't afford a landline phone, and has a pre-paid cell, always running out of credit. I got a cell so I could stay in contact with her. I HATED HAVING IT!!!! I let the damn thing lapse. I HATED texts, HATED if it rang!

Doctors/scientists/social commentators etc. always come up with the same scares regarding technology, so I'm not surprised to read this. They said similar things when email was taking off and probably did it for the good old telephone too.

Ahh, the perils of typing.

It's like everything though, it's only a tool to be used or abused. You could easily give up on the real people around you and become reclusive. Communicating via text or online methods only. Or you can embrace the technology and use it as part of a balanced lifestyle.

A team of doctors could come here, look at a sample of threads and declare we are all social misfits, incapable of forming real meaningful friendships. They would say we should be out in the real world, talking to real people. It's easy for someone that doesn't understand something to make judgements based around their own beliefs. I spend a fair amount of time reading and posting here, so does that make me a social misfit with no ability to communicate with 'real' people?

But on the other hand, how many friendships have been formed through the org? I bet there are a large number of people that have become friends here. I've certainly made a few and have even been lucky enough to find a special someone to whom I'm getting married in August. Wasn't looking for that, it just happened and without orging and texting, it probably would never have happened.

Texting is just another option and most people I know use it. It doesn't replace face to face, or ear to ear communication, it's just another option. In fact, I'd say that I probably keep in touch with people more because of it.

I love texting...and sometimes I would rather text then talk on the phone.
