Alarm Systems

Who has one in their home? Looking for recommendations, please.

I'm not even sure how they work. Does having pets cause a problem?

the motion sensors can be set so they only sense the top half of rooms, leaving the bottom half free for pets to walk around.

Cool, I'm just a bit worried about my cat setting it off if he jumps up on things in the middle of the night.

I use ADT security.

The cool thing about the security pad is you can enter in a code to disable it, or you can enter a code to disable it AND alert the authorities that you're doing so because someone is forcing you to.

The motion sensors can be adjusted to allow pets to roam like Chris said, but mine were so sensitive that if my pet touched my curtains and they moved, it would set my alarm off.

The little tiny stickers you can place in your windows with the "ADT" alarm sticker are enough to make most would-be burglars vandals move on to the next house. (though of course, no system is perfect)

I also heard that if you live alone, and are female, buy a pair of the largest male boots you can find, and it them outside of an entrance to the house you think a burgler might go through. This may be an urban legend though.

You can't just find those ADT stickers though.

I'm not worried about random break-ins or anything like that.

I'm getting it because I am afraid of one specific person breaking in while I'm home.

I'm pretty nervous about all this to be honest.

I'm just really afraid the pets will create a huge problem and the last thing I want is an alarm to go off terrifying my son and I.

You can disable the motion detector and still enable the window and door sensors to go off if they're messed with or opened.

ADT signs and stickers: http://cgi.ebay.com/2-ADT...1|294%3A50

(you can type in 'ADT stickers' on ebay)

I don't know if you own or rent, but they make doors that are very difficult to break down. They cost a few hundred bucks, but help.

The problem with knowing a specific person that wants in is that they're a bit more motivated than your average thug. neutral

I had no idea you could just get them like that. lol

I rent and have a shared entrance so the front door isn't much of a worry and my private back door is pretty secure. I just worry about the windows. I don't want to be all sealed up every night, it would be nice to be able to get some summer breeze through the house as we sleep but the thought of just a screen as a barrier scares the shit outta me.

Ya, being afraid that someone is going to retaliate is the worst feeling in the world. Last night a car stopped in from of my house for a few minutes, actually backed up to stop in front and it totally freaked me out. Probably totally harmless but that kind of shit scares me now.

This is drastic but if you rent and ever consider moving, most high rise apartment buildings now have security and people have to sing in just to get to your place.
I was surveying a condo like that in Tampa. They gate guard took down the license plate of every car that entered the parking garage, and all the guest had to check in at the front desk---and the guard had to check to see if you were a 'permitted' guest or not...then ring you from the lobby.

I know, drastic lol
But the views in that place were love

Yeah, you can just order the stickers. They actually are a deterrent for alot of folks.

That looks like a really good solution - cheaper too! I'm sorry to hear something's going on that makes you feel less safe. I hope things work out.

They are great solutions if you don't mind the system not being hooked up to notify the authorities.

With pro systems like ADT, etc. etc., cops are notified if the alarm goes off and you do not respond, and the fire department is notified if the smoke alarm goes off and you do not call ADT to say "false alarm".

It depends on how far you want to take it, but all the solutions posted here are great. It's scary enough as a man, but I can't imagine being a woman and having to take security into consideration.

I have one close to the ADT one, when I am home I put mine on "perimeter" and if someone tries to open a window or a door it goes off, but my family and I can walk around inside with out a problem.

Be safe.

It is a must have on the home and the property. I can't speak 2 pets though since I don't have any.

With an almost 4 year old little boy and a dog I really don't want to do the whole highrise thing. I love my little house and yard.
