that's the general opinion yeah
but i think he knew all about those rumours of exploitation
i'm sure he used Warhol to his own benefit too to some degree..
the art world is never fair lol

nod Oh no doubt. Basquiat wouldn't have had access to the wealthy patrons and art world connections if it weren't for Warhol. But Warhol was a notorious user of other people's talents. Steve Kaufman, an artist whom I'm collecting, was Warhol's assistant at the time of his death and was doing most of the work on Warhol's pieces before he died and finished all of his commissioned works at the time of his death. Steve had a stroke a few weeks ago coincidentally.

no surprise there, i think there was a scene in BASQUIAT where warhol had people hired to piss on his piss paintings lol (really? he couldn't do it himself? hahaha then again it IS warhol rolleyes )
lol he definitely was a fan of having others create art for him
i don't think most of it was ill willed though - if he lived longer it probably would've started to make sense

but he didn't , and it don't make no sense anyway. falloff
basquiat and i are planning to wed next lifetime biggrin

Yeah, Warhol was definitely spayshul. Gotta love that nut though. My favorite gallery just had one of his Mammy pieces on auction, which I am committed to buying before I die. I sho was trynta figure out where I could get $80 grand to buy that joint. Alas, I decided a roof over my head was kinda important. pout

Did you see the movie Factory Girl?

Yeah, I know. sigh A friend of mine lived in NYC in the early 80s and knew Warhol. Dude was basically homeless and took his last $1000 to buy one of Warhol's "$" The shit's worth $100,000 now. omfg

That Mammy prolly went for around $60k but yeah it's a lot. I fully intend to get one someday and put it in storage somewhere. If I hold onto it for 30 years it will easily be worth 10 times as much if not more. Nowadays, art is a better investment than the stock market. That's how I spend most of my discretionary dollars when I have it. Loves me some art. love

Factory Girl is actually a good lil movie. I had no idea Sienna Miller could really act. Guy Pearce was great as Warhol and Hayden Christenssen was Bob Dylan. Interesting story.

Jeffrey Wright was genius in this movie as Basquiat.

I'm really glad everybody's contributing. So much to respond to I don't know where to start. I'm impressed firstly at all the knowledge orgers have of Basquiat and with all the knowledge being shared.

It's good to see that his life is remembered by a lot of people. And I wish more people would remember him and his legacy. I think he's awesome. And I really admire him.

The cast alone is crazy. It's been awhile since I've seen it so I can't remember if Madonna was IN the movie or if they showed Basquiat's romance with her. hmmm
