My car was broken into today and my discman and 60 tapes were stolen! I went to school today around noon and parked in a crowded parking lot. I went back to the car around 2:30 to find my driver's side front window smashed in and the goods taken! Apparently, whoever is guilty of it will get away with it as well, because the police said it's difficult to track these types of crimes. What makes me most upset is that the case in which the tapes were held was my first ever tape case from back in 1989. It was a nice gray color and had a little sentimental value to it. Of course, it contained all of my favorite artists.

What makes me angry about it is that all of this drama is happening during finals week! I get food poisoning on Thursday and now this! The end of the semester can't get hear soon enough!

I'm sorry, Moonbeam. Our laundry mat has been broken in to twice. They've still not figured out who did it. The police go by the laundry several times a night now.

They stole $10, a digital camera, and my copy of The Rainbow Children - for whatever reason. Though I figured they'd bring it back after they got a listen.

i have a cd wallet stolen fairly recently as well...with about 150 cds in it...it really sucks when you decide you wanna hear somethin and then you realize that was among the stolen items...

joe average wouldn't have wanted what was in my cd wallet to begin with...i've managed to replace a lot of the stuff tho..and now i burn ev'rything before it goes in the truck wit me...

Thanks for the offer guys! I have all of the music already, but the fact that some of these tapes are ones I have had since 1990 or so really bothers me. How can someone steal music? It's like someone's soul...it's such an invasive thing to do! Also, tapes are really hard to replace. Where am I going to find another copy of the Gold Experience on tape? Emancipation? Rave? There were some in there that can't be replaced at all, like an NPG Sampler I got after a Prince show in 1999. The War will be hard to get again too. Oh well, it's just stuff. At least there wasn't anything more valuable in there.

OMG Ian that SUUUXXX! First off, why your car? Could it have been someone that knows you? I mean, most people have a discman already and you can't get that much money for them if you were to try to sell. And music is so specific, what are the chances that in any random car, you're going to find something you like or something of enough value to trade. Most people only have a handful of cd's in a car and if they have more, it's usually in one of those wallet thingies, which you couldn't sell anyway without the cases. And why would someone try to sell tapes anyway. They'd probably get about 25 to 50 cents a piece for them. So that's what, at best $30. Plus the maybe $20 they'd get for a used discman. That's not even worth the damage to the window let alone the fine and jailtime if they were to be caught. It just doesn't make much sense unless the person was way desparate or knows you. If you're feeling vengeful, you should go around to every used music store you can think of and describe your list of music that was stolen. See if they'll call you if a bunch of tapes arrive fitting that description and have them get the name of the person selling them. Places often ask for your name anyway when selling/trading music. That might be your first step to recovering these or catching the asshole that did it. Do you think your insurance will pay for the damaged windows and the estimated loss of your stuff? If so, I would as for at least $4/tape ($240) $40 for the case, and $100 for the discman so that you can start replacing some of this stuff, cost free to you. I'm really sorry to hear about this. I hate having things stolen and I hate having to replace music. You're right, the end of the semester won't get here soon enough. So we can hit Hot Hits, Blast and Melodies & Memories and raid their tape section! Damn, what a horribly sucky, awful way to start out your week.

I had that happen when I first moved to MPLS... I remember walking back to my car after work, and standing there - in disbelief - looking at my car with it's window on the sidewalk. I felt totally violated. This was my very first introduction to crime.

What sucked too, is that it was in the middle of winter, so with tears in my eyes...I had to drive home freezing, literally...
