This just happened in the ceramics studio across from the studio I have my classes in - I'm completely shocked and so thankful I wasn't on campus today!


Two people were shot and killed Friday at a community college in Dearborn, Michigan, an official said.


The Henry Ford Community College campus in Dearborn, Michigan, was locked down after the shooting.

A man and woman were found dead in a classroom building on the campus of Henry Ford Community College, said Dearborn Fire Department Battalion Chief John Hay.

Dearborn police confirmed that shots were fired at the college and that the scene was contained. They declined to say whether anyone was in custody.

A woman who answered the phone in the office of the school's president, Gail Mee, said that the shootings occurred in the Fine Arts Building and that the campus was in lockdown.

Deputy Police Chief Gregg Brighton says Henry Ford Community College was locked down in the early afternoon Friday shortly after a 911 caller reported shots were fired.

Responding officers set up a perimeter around the fine arts building and heard a gunshot as they entered.

Brighton says police discovered the bodies of a man and a woman in a room. He says he didn't think it was being used at the time.

The lockdown has been lifted.

Brighton says a shotgun was used in the killings.

I want to know how he got it into the building! I hope this doesn't mean that we're going to have to be subject to metal detectors and searches. It's just so awful that a place for learning and creating art has been used to violently attack and end life.

Some local news reports are saying she was sexually assulted before she was killed.

Oh, my! I just saw that you attend HFCC (I'm a counselor at OCC). I'm so glad you're o.k.!

The guy who did it was a regular on youtube and he posted a video on youtube just hours before he ended his life and that young lady's saying he was to kill himself but he was scared to go alone. Many people tried talking him out of it and called authorities but it was too late. The young lady was not his girlfriend as I've seen reported by the media, he was more or less her stalker. The guy had serious issues as other videos of his are still on youtube clearly show.

That's the really hard part. Just looking at his videos, clearly show a very unstable mind. He was banned from youtube several times but did as everyone does, created a new name and came right back. I'd seen a few of his rants and basically I'm not going to say it was his religion because it was never really clear that he had one or another but I thought it was more his belief system as a whole that molded him into one very twisted individual. His own mother said on the news that she KNEW her son's life would end by suicide but she couldn't get him the treatment he needed.

There are folks trying to stand in the way of Universal Health Care, all the while the mentally unstable are walking amongst us, clearly in need of help that they just aren't getting. It's a damn shame, really it is!

Even if you could do that, in most cases around the country, there aren't many places left, due to cuts in "socialized spending" where you'd be able to take them. That is of course, unless their last name were Spears or something, than you'd have shrinks making house calls and shit.

The college has issued some statements including this one:

Henry Ford Community College will resume classes on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 with the exception of those classes scheduled in the Grant MacKenzie Fine Arts Center. Those classes will resume on Wednesday, April 15, 2009.The Fine Arts building, with the exception of art studios, will be closed for the remainder of the semester. Classes regularly held in the Fine Arts building have been relocated to other classrooms on campus.

The thing is - they are moving all classes except those which take place in the three studios in the building. My classes are in one of the studios and the murder/suicide took place in the studio across from the one I take classes in! I don't understand moving all other classes, but leaving those poor ceramics students to keep taking classes in the room the murders took place in! WTF?!?

I called the president's office today and they told me they were closing the studio the murders took place in, but they haven't listed it on the Web page like they have the others. It's just crazy. I have an email into the head of our department to see if he can do anything.

This was scary! I was planning to be on the campus that day because I'm looking to re-enroll. I'm glad I had other things to do that day, otherwise I would've been caught up in all the madness. Very sad.
