Andover, Ma? I may have an opportunity to travel to Andover in June on a work assignment for 6 weeks. Does anyone know what there is to do for fun around there? I've never been to the East Coast. "When words fail, music speaks..." --- Shakespeare

I live about 20 minutes south. There is nothing but industrial parks and strip malls. Rent a car and you can venture into 9 states and 1 country in 6 hours or less. There are plenty of wonderful things to see and do in New England. Just not Andover. Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.. (Voltaire)

One of the managers said, just take some time and go to Boston and Martha's Vineyard. Guess that's what I have to do then. "When words fail, music speaks..." --- Shakespeare

You will not be too far from the city of Boston, where there are TONS of things to do! You can get on a local commuter train or drive to Boston, it is sooooo worth it. Boston is a historical city, with tons to see, great bars, grea sporting events, zoo, incredible museums, beautiful parks....a million things to do. Its really a matter of WHAT you want to do. Definitely the place to go from andover if you want to know the truth. Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian, any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

Thanks! Yes, I was told of the museums and such. I do want to go to Salem for the witch museum. I'm looking for a nightlife kinda thing in Andover or Boston so I gotta look into that. "When words fail, music speaks..." --- Shakespeare

There is an Andover herein England just outside Basingstoke in the countryside - visit the country pubs - go for country walks - go shopping - take the train into Basingstoke - "I may not agree with what you say but I'll fight for your right to say it"

Yeah, what they said above. You won't find nightlife in Andover. I'm from Cambridge, across the Charles River from Boston proper. It's gorgeous, funky, eclectic and fun, with tons of ethnic restaurants, lounges, clubs, bars, etc. If you're looking for smaller, more funky clubs, go to Central Square in Cambridge. If you're looking for the meat-market clubbing scene, go to Lansdowne Street in Boston, right behind Fenway Park. The Normal Whores Club

You have to take a ferry to get over to Martha's Vineyard and most of it is closed until summer!
Go to Boston. You won't be far from there. I see you're from California...good luck trying to drive around here if you're not familiar with the area!!! We don't believe in grids! . [Edited 4/13/09 6:24am]

I'm used to laidback places to just chill (cafe's, bars, pubs) or goth clubs in L.A. where people just leave you alone. "When words fail, music speaks..." --- Shakespeare

[Edited 4/13/09 6:24am] Cool! Well, the job opportunity is from about June 8th thru sometime in July. Yep, I'm here in Cali and do not even want to attempt driving there. I'm used to laidback places to just chill (cafe's, bars, pubs) or goth clubs in L.A. where people just leave you alone. The River Gods is a great Irish pub. The Enormous Room is a plush lounge, with pillows and comfy furniture everywhere. ManRay is a goth/fetish club. All these places are located in Central Square in Cambridge, which is accessible by public transportation on the Red Line (subway). In the same neighborhood you can find authentic Chinese food, Ethiopian restaurants, falafel shacks, Greek and Middle Eastern food, Italian cafes and wonderful sandwich shops. Hi-Fi Pizza is open all hours if you want a nice, greasy, thin-crust slice after a night of drinking. Harvard Square used to be great, but it has become so gentrified that it's almost unrecognizable. Most of the establishments that had stood for decades, like the bar and the diner that they went to in Good Will Hunting, have been replaced with chain stores and upscale bistros. Enjoy your time in Mass. June is pretty much the best month, weather-wise. The Normal Whores Club

Damn, ManRay is closed. But their website has an events page that is often updated with what's going in in the "underground" scene:
