Does The Supermarket Make You Break Your Diet? Can you skip certain aisles? Have you seen how much Cake and Bread is at the SUPERMARKET? [Edited 4/9/09 13:04pm]

My favorite grocery store (Gelson's) has a killer bakery inside! brownies, cookies, cakes, breads....I stay away from the bakery as much as possible, but damn I love me some sweets!!

1. Never go to the store hungry
2. Shop the fresh food section ONLY (stay away from the processed crap) We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I avoid the aisles that have my favorite junk foods. What Genesia said is true. Don't go to the store hungry! That's the worst thing you can do! You'll leave with $200 worth of extra food.
If you want to kick a junk food habit just make it through a week or so without it and you'll crave it less. I promise. You'll be surprised.

OMG...rum raisin... I make homemade cinnamon frozen custard (six egg yolks in a quart of that stuff...and the cinnamon is infused in the milk overnight) and put rum-soaked raisins in it. It is lethal. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Ice cream is chemistry - really, really hard to wing it. You can't just throw together random amounts of sugar, milk and cream and expect to get something good. It can turn out grainy...or icy...or too hard... We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

So I gave up trying until someone can teach me. But still, home made rumraisin sounds awesome... little raisins though. I can't handle those ginormous ones in my icecream.

Never go up and down the aisles... go around the outer four walls because that's where you'll find the most "healthy" ingredients. Only go down an aisle if you NEED something specific...
that's what I've learned and the don't go hungry thing is critical!!! . [Edited 4/9/09 16:08pm] A working class Hero is something to be ~ Lennon

I do pretty well, for the most part. Some days are better than others and I've learned that I have to indulge every now and again if I don't want to completely fall off the wagon. Always remember that indulging is not the same as overindulging. One day at a time... Shake it til ya make it

Well saidd. If you deprive yourself of 1 food group; you will fail on your diet. Everything in moderation is good for you, but don't use your own definition of moderation Prince's Sarah

Yeah, see...your ratios are off. Your mixture might be too lean (too much milk, not enough cream) or too rich and overchurned (so the cream's turning to butter). If you're having trouble getting it to thicken up in the ice cream maker, chances are, it's the "too lean" thing. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. (I think its not enough cream) I'll try with my dad next time... he can even make chocolate. That is very gritty homemade, but its delicious.

I normally shop for specific items instead of browsing.
If I want cake, I'll go for cake.

The chocolate adds both fat and non-fat solids into the mix - it's very difficult to get smooth. I make a killer bittersweet chocolate ice cream (with chile, cinnamon, coffee and vanilla) and that actually needs simple syrup as an addition to get the ratio right. That ice cream takes two solid days to make. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

[Edited 4/9/09 13:04pm] When you go to the supermarket next time, try this trick: Walk by a display of candy bars or donuts, and just stand there and stare at them, but don't pick anything up. After about a minute, you'll find something weird - your will be able to detach from what your emotional side is telling you about these desserts and you will see them for what they are - just desserts (no pun intended.) You will have to do it more than once, but the point is that you have to be willing to question what your egoic mind is telling you about what you see, and maybe walk away with the realization that maybe this shouldn't listen to this side of you first and all the time.
