Seriously though, I think it's mainly because our minds work differently when it comes to attracting and being attracted to the opposite sex. We may have advanced technologically in massive spades over the last 100 years, but physically and emotionally we still seek partners sexually the same way our caveman ancestors did. Men are very visual, and they still seek out the hottest women with the most perfect breasts and/or the most well-proportioned hips and ass in order to pass on their genes to the next generation for survival. Women, on the other hand, not only have the inenviable task of producing said offspring but raising them to adulthood as well, so they have to be more selective about the qualities a man has in order to make sure that not only well she bear the man's offspring but that the man will protect and nurture her and her offspring through time. So that's the major reason why women consider more than a man's physical attractiveness when choosing a mate.

That's not to say that women (and really hot women) aren't attracted to pretty boys, but they also know that a pretty boy himself who has those quality traits that she desires will also be desired by others, and the pretty boy has more options to mate with others (i.e., become a player). While the pretty boy may have all of the qualities that make her want to mate with him, she may soon discover that he lacks the qualities of a nurturing husband and/or father to her children.

As for why she may hook up with what many people consider a physically unattractive male, he may lack some of the physical qualities of the pretty boy, but he compensate for it by having the qualities of a potentially great husband and father (financially supportive, good in bed with foreplay as well as his penis, good with children, stays masculine, has self-confidence, etc.). And knowing that her no-so-attractive mate doesn't have as many options to hook up with other partners, she knows that he will be very attentive to her needs and desires, and she may even grow to love him passionately over time.
