What rocket scientist decided that someone who looks like a famine victim would make a good model in the first place? I know the common wisdom is that clothes hang better on skeletons, but says who? Do these people who've made this proclamation not have functioning eyes? What makes them think bones visible through fabric is the best way to showcase a design? [Edited 2/19/09 23:48pm] Never understood this "theory" as if a woman that's 4 or 6 instead of double-0 is gonna destroy the lines of a design. True story. I work for a clothing company - one that has a healthy share of the American swimwear market. We were in a walk-through for a marketing piece...and the head of merchandising said, "Do we have any better shots of that swimsuit? One on another model, maybe? She looks kind of chunky." Now, this was a model we used all the time - very popular, had sold lots of swimwear for us. And she was a 4 - not chunky in the least. They kept trying to find other shots. No luck. Finally, the art director said, "Did you ever think that...maybe...it's just an unflattering swimsuit? I mean...if it makes Tanya look fat...what hope is there for the rest of us?" They pulled the suit - and I almost hugged her. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It's true that different designs look different on different body types. But what's the point in a human clothesrack that looks like the fake skeleton in a high school biology class? How is it possible that visible ribs and collar bones and pelvis make more a visually appealling way to showcase fabrics and design than a normal female physique? It's insane. (generally, we all know how gimp sizing can be ) A friend of mine who is a model showed me a chart of the physical requirements her agency has for prospects. Evidently, I'm too fat to be a petite. Good gravy. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
