so, I'm thinking of taking up running...

I've kind of flirted with the idea in the past but somehow I just never did. Now that I've quit smoking, I think maybe it's time.

There's a store here in Uptown called The Running Room that has "Learn to Run" classes that are only $70 for a 10 week course that each class is part lecture, part group run with the goal that by the end of the class you can run comfortably for 20 minutes (and there's a race for you to run in at the end as well).

There's a new class starting in mid March. I think I'm gonna do it.

Any running tips? Anyone take up running recently?

They actually instruct you on shoe choice, and I'm hoping that's in the first class, cause I don't have any runnign shoes. lol

And, erm, I gonna need an industrial strength jogging bra, so I don't think that will be an issue. lol

I love running and have been doing it for probably about 15 years now. Not every day, but whenever I can.

I remember the first time I ever went running though. lol I could only manage 15 minutes (I was dumb and didn't even think to pace myself with walking/jogging/walking again... etc.) and I swear I couldn't walk for a week because my inner thigh muscles were so sore! disbelief

And yes, good shoes are a must. nod I need new ones badly. I feel like I'm running in socks at the moment. lol

Yeah, I can see it easily becoming one of those nice, zen, lifelong, stress-reducing, make-me-feel-good habits. The kind I never thought I'd pick up but appeals to me more and more the older I get. ;lol:

And I know it will be hard work at first. but the good kind of hard work. smile

Look at your feet to make sure they're pointing forward

One thing I always see people doing is running with one foot pointed at an odd angle. Often they will have a knee brace lol Running with bad form will definitely hurt your knee, and if your knee is so messed up you can't run correctly, then don't run.

IN general make sure you're planting your feet right, heel toe and running on the outsides of the base of your feet (as opposed to letting your feet sag over the arches). It'll help prevent injuries.

I don't believe so much in the different styles of pronation as much as I believe in bad posture (but I'm sure some would argue)

I started doing it for a few months before i got pregnant. It was hard going at first but it got easier and was rewarding. The class sounds like a really good idea.

The first time i went out for as run I did about 1 mile. You know what it is like here, we have lots of steep slopes etc. Anyway, when I got home I was in such a mess. I stripped off and lay on the cool conservatory slate tiles trying to recover. I could not get up for 30 mins lol

Go for it!

That's why I think the class is such a good idea! You've paid your money so you go and once you've done it for 10 weeks you've built it into a habit.

It's not for everyone. That tortured look runners always wear is not for no reason. But then the addiction is real, too.

I took it up because it was so simple. Go outside & run around. I was in need of that kind of mindless intensity & sunshine.

But it's hard. Some people like a gentler type of exercise, or a more varied form.

It's good to try, at least!

Honestly, that's a big part of why I haven't done it before. I walk miles and miles, I just never wanted to run cause it's downright painful.

But someone right here on the org (I think CalhounSquare!) showed me some available for order online that I think will totally do the trick.

That's why I haven't either. Gravity sucks doesn't it? disbelief Do you by any chance have a link for that? It's hopefully not too long for me to go before the surgery, but still I'd appreciate it a lot. smile

you can also run so you're not bouncing so much. I had to learn to roll instead of bounce. Bouncing is good for basketball & jumping, but not jogging.

Sounds awesome Carrie!! I've jogged off and on but never regularly enough to build up and real endurance.

My advice is to start small and build your way up. If you expect to much when starting out, you'll just poop yourself out and get discouraged.

Also, STRETCH!! but you'll learn that in class

GOOD LUCK! You're making me want to give running another serious shot too biggrin
If you will, so will I

Doesn't matter how much you roll, some things are just too painful for people like us. confused

I don't run. I work out like a banshee, and I do aerobic stuff, but running seems to make my body fall apart.

By the way, I recently found the BEST exercise for creating a flat stomach and six-pack abs - jump rope!

Seriously. I got bored with the elliptical machine, so I started jumping rope to get my heartrate up before a work out. It's great for that, but DANG did my abs flatten out with a quickness.

I'm up to 200 reps at a time now. I don't know if that's low or high, but I do know that I am one week away from turning 50, and I have six-pack abs. Not magazine-quality, but you can see the definition, and it's ALL due to jumping rope.

What interests me most with running is it's outdoors and it's free. lol

I don't have anywhere to jump rope at. I can't work out in my apartment without pissing off my downstairs neighbor. I like to be respectful.

Like dirt and grass? Most of the time I'll be running on sidewalk and paved walking paths, but there are spots you can kind of run alongside them in the grass...
