Valkyrie

Went to see this last night as a favor to a friend.

Thought I would hate it (generally don't like scripted stuff, don't like war and/or historical flicks), but it was excellent. Very, very hard to watch the end, but I would highly recommend it.

This film was also a history lesson for me. I am quite ashamed to admit that I was under the impression that Germans spoke German in the 1940s. redface

If Americans weren't so lazy when it comes to subtitles, foreign films would be MUCH more popular.

get the original German movie:

the dude who played Stauffenberg is excellent German actor Sebastian Koch, who is shagging Dutch goddess Carice van Houten in real life, who plays Stauffenberg's wife in the Cruise-Valkyrie.....

I hate that about movies! mad

I'd rather read subtitles, than see a movie that takes place in China, yet all the dialogue is English!
If you will, so will I

The language/accent thing is one reason I am not rushing out to see this movie. Tom Cruise speaking with an American accent. One guy speaking with a British accent. No one speaking with a German accent or the German language.

Hey don't count me in the lazy American category. I've watched many a subtitled movie. It's not an issue for me.

I also didn't have the highest of expectations, but I loved this film! It had a great atmosphere and was gripping throughout. I understand the issue of the accents and language, but they told the story very well.

I totally adore both "Da hong deng long gao gao gua" and "Ba wang bie ji". They made me fall in love with Mandarin and Chinese opera. I love, love, love Zhao Jiping's music.

It sucked!

And the attempts to drum up drama and tension . . . . pathetic.
I never bought it.
I did enjoy 'Defiance.'

I saw Defiance last night. It wasn't bad. The climax was totally predictable though. At least some of the actors spoke Russian part of the time.

None of the Germans spoke English. razz

it was a decent movie.

kind of funny that there were a lot of protest from the German government because Tom Cruise is a Scientologist, which is considered a cult in Germany. Also, the family of Stauffenburg didn't want Cruise to have anything to do with this because they felt he would turn into a Hollywood cockbuster.

Cruise was intriqued with the role because of the uncanny resemblance to Stauffenburg.
