So I've decided to....

start making jewelry.

I've got a ton of ideas in my head but the only problem is...I have no idea where to start. Basically I want to start off making silver pendants for necklaces. I don't even know how that's done. I've already got a diamond supplier (thanks to my friends father! woot! ) but um....ya... I'm kinda lost as to where to begin.

Anyone here make their own jewelry? Any silversmiths here or know someone who is? Is this even possible for me to do myself???

And yes...I'm starting to see what I can find online in terms of resources.

I've only made beaded jewelry but I think you'd be able to work with silver as long as you have a place in your home to put the equipment.

Be sure to take pictures of you with your welding mask on. lol

It certainly isn't that hard to do poured or even lost wax pattern casting at home, but I'm not sure what the start up cost would be. Probably best to sub out at first.

Get ahold of Naked Piano Player, she has been selling jewellery, but I don't know what type

A friend from back home sells it, I saw her website on facebook. I will try to contact her to see if she has any useful info to pass on.
If you do start make it and start selling it, I look forward to seeing your creations.

Yes it is possible.
If you've got ideas and desire...GO FOR IT!

See if any of the local colleges/art schools...or even art leagues/coop galleries offer classes.

I know at one of the galleries I show at the jewelers (one a silver jeweler) teach classes.

I would think that would be a good way to get your toes wet and get more resources.

Good luck!

Oh! And post pics of what you make!!!

Me love pics. biggrin

Hi Erin, I make silver jewellery myself - there's a product that you can buy called silver clay (aka PMC or art clay) its basically a clay that has fine 99% pure ground silver in it. You mould or sculpt the clay to how you want it, let it dry, then burn off the clay using a small blow torch or your gas hob ring with a special cage. You can buy kits to get you started and its fairly reasonable to buy the silver clay. Apparently this form of silver is purer than sterling silver and you can get it hallmarked as such at the assay office (is there an American equivelent?)

Google 'precious metal clay' and have a look. I think that there's a pmc guild in the US too if you were that way inclined

Good luck, have a go and let me know how you get on
I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off
