US Airways jet crashes in Hudson River (NYC)

Breaking News:

A US Airways jet (flight 1549) leaving from LaGuardia evidently went down in the Hudson River (near the Intrepid Museum/42nd Street). They are showing live footage on Fox and the plane isn't broken or anything, the tail is upright/visible as is the cockpit. No word on survivors, etc. They are saying there were 146 passengers and 5 crew members on board.

Water temperature is 41 degrees in the Hudson right now. There are a lot of water ferries and divers in the river right now.

An eye witness said she saw flames coming out of the left engine and was getting lower and lower in the sky. I guess maybe the pilot chose to try to land in the river instead of crashing into Manhattan/New Jersey where more people would have been injured.

Now they are saying it may have hit a flock of birds upon take off...

From what I heard, it wasn't terrorism but a flock of geese that got into the engine.

From the NY Times online:

4:12 p.m. | A USAirways plane that took off at 3:26 p.m. from La Guardia Airport landed in the Hudson River five minutes later, where it remains mostly submerged. Ferries and other boats converged to help with a rescue effort, as the plane drifted south. There was no immediate information about the 151 people on board.

According to Channel 4 television news, the plane, US Airways flight 1549, took off from LaGuardia Airport at 3:26 p.m. was bound for Charlotte, N.C. and had 146 passengers and 5 crew members. The plane, which made it to a height of 3,600 feet, may have hit a flock of birds, according to the report, and then plummeted. The pilot tried to return to the airport when the plane fell into the Hudson.

Television reports showed several commuter ferries around where the plane, an Airbus A320, was in the water. New York Police Department divers dove into the water to assist with the rescue as plane floated southbound on the river, possibly due to the tidal direction.

The divers were dropped into the water from helicopters overhead, police officials said. Some passengers were able to free themselves from the plane. They could be seen on the exterior in televised reports.

Some passengers being plucked from the frigid water were being taken to the Circle Line piers nearby at West 42nd Street. It was less than 20 degrees Farenheit in New York City at the time. Fire and police rescue crews were rushing to the water.

One witness interviewed by Channel 4 said he saw the plane descending steadily without its landing gear down.

MSNBC has live video of the scene.

We would like to hear from witnesses who saw the plane go down. Call our Metro Desk editorial assistants at (212) 556-1533.

Al Baker contributed reporting.

Which is a credit to the crew. As much as people want to think of flight attendants as waiters and waitresses...this is what they're really there for.

i'm glad everyone got out safely but let's be real...

flight attendants are there to over charge me for a bagel and tell me to turn my electronics off in the middle of a sentimental goodbye on the telephone or my favorite jam on my iPod. Oh, and to occassionally sleep with in the destination city.

just kidding, just kidding! the whole crew looks to have done a great job getting everyone to safety.

eek Are you serious?! omfg I have always wondered what happened if a bird got caught in the engine. It's totally in the realm of possibility. How scary. They need to put a shield that will allow all the air but not a large object in!
