I went apartment hunting with a friend last week and in a really nice area outside of downtown you can pay about $1000/month for 1400 sq ft 3 bdrm apt. Texas, in general, except for Austin, is pretty reasonable. And when I bought my first home, 10 years ago, I was making about $15/hour on my primary job. [Edited 1/13/09 11:46am] You can't rent an apartment let alone buy a house in Cali for 15 an hour. Not even in Compton! That's why I ain't going NOWHERE! Plus NO state tax.

No one is as rich as they used to be as our money simply isn't going as far. That and I lost a third of my 401k this year, most people did as well. Minimum wage hasn't gone up here in nearly 6 years. It's still stuck at $8 an hour. Some employers are trying to be generous in making their starting wage $10 or $11, but when a recent independent study has concluded that asurivival wage in this province is closer to $14 or $15 an hour, that extra two bucks doesn't stretch far. is $20 an hour still considered good money?
considering the growing unemployment rate, minimum wage is good money.

It depends on where you live and what your expenses are. In most areas of the South, Appalachia, the Midwest, the Southwest, and the Pacific Northwest, you could raise a family of four with that wage, albeit just getting by. If you live in New York City, Chicago, Boston, Miami, and anywhere in California or Hawaii, you will just barely get by on that wage if you live alone. But in this economy, that is becoming a very decent wage, since a lot of temp jobs are maxing out at $14-$17/hr. in the cities and about three dollars less than that in smaller cities and towns.

I need to leave the Bay Area For a 1 bedroom (800-900 Sq ft) you're looking @ at least a grand if the area is decent. Even trekking off to more suburban areas will keep you in the high $800's for the same. I couldn't even think about a 3 bedroom unless I got a damn sugar-daddy AND put in my own $$$

& like everyone said, it's all in relation to where & how you live. I was too happy when I started making $20. That was years ago - I couldn't live on it now but that's only b/c as I made more, I took on more. It's all relative

Depends on where you live in Chicago. I've made that amount and had a 3 bedroom where I took care of myself and my 3 kids.

We were just told that our company isn't going to match our vested total for 2008, so that is half lost for the year right there. But woohoo, we got $100 giftcard at the end of the year instead of the usual $50. But yeah, $20 an hour is relative, circumstances and location. If you're paying $450 rent then yeah, it'll do ya good, but at $1,200+ you gotta watch your pennies. [Edited 1/15/09 20:18pm]

If i made $20.00 an hour, i'd be in the streets. (That said, I have been debt free for 10 years now so that isnt the issue) Its California for ya!
...but we have great weather!
