I'll find the links where Lovie and the GM said that Rex is the QB and that the Bears don't need Warner or Brees. I can't amke this up even if I wanted 2. Why do u think I can't stand the guy? [Edited 12/31/08 13:09pm] If he actually said that, then I can see why you don't like him...but that doesn't mean Shanahan can do ANYTHING with Grossman or Orton...but Orton may end up getting better. I'd take Mike Shanahan over Ron Turner as offensive coordinator any day, but my guess is that Shanahan will still probably have his pick of whatever vacant coaching jobs outside of Denver if he wants one. As for the Bears, they will probably stick with Kyle Orton, but Rex Grossman is all but likely out of the Windy City. Even so, their passing game really suffered without a speedy receiver like Bernard Berrian to stretch the opposing defenses. Devin Hester is still learning the position, Brandon Lloyd, despite his injuries, is decent but more of a possession receiver than deep threat, and Marty Booker and Rashied Davis underperformed this season. It's no accident that the Bears' leading receivers this season were Matt Forte, their running back, and their tight ends Desmond Clark and Gregg Olson. Heck, I might even take Rod Marinelli as my defensive coordinator over Bob Babich. Once Ron Rivera was dumped by Lovie Smith, the Bears defense really began going downhill. Part of it was due to injuries, but a bigger reason was because their front four no longer had any pass rush, allowing opposing quarterbacks to tee off on the secondary. San Diego's defense was pretty suspect this season, and they sorely missed Shaun Merriman, but once Ron Rivera took over as defensive coordinator their defense improved considerably. Having said that, Norv Turner is one of the luckiest coaches out there, having made the playoffs two years in a row despite his efforts to sabotage the team. If anything, he's the flip side of Wade Phillips,.a great coordinator who can't win as a head coach. As for Bill Cowher, the reason he reportedly turned down the Jets coaching job was because they wouldn't let him take control of bringing in his own personnel. But now that Denver's position is vacant, I wouldn't be surprised if they quickly made a run at getting him. | |
