Can I take my hard drive from my dead hp laptop and put it in my new dell laptop?

You need to put the sharp end of it in the CD drive of the laptop and then wrench it open.

I haven't done this with laptops before, but I'm guessing it should be fine as long as you reformat and reinstall the operating system. There are probably going to be drivers on there that may cause issues with different hardware, so starting with a clean slate would be best. If there are files on the hard drive you need, though, I would get an external HD case, put the HD in it, and transfer the files to another location until you can put them back on the reformatted drive.
