I've owned my new PC for TWo weeks and.. It had 3 viruses and a dozen pieces of spyware on it.
I did wait 10 days to buy Norton Anti-virus to put on it, but god damn. Is this normal? For fucks sake. . [Edited 11/19/08 19:28pm]

No that's not normal.
You should be able to own your computer for years and not get a virus. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but 10 days without anti virus shouldn't hurt unless you only hang around the pure ghetto of the internet. I really hope you've put firewall's and anti spy ware on it as well. [Edited 11/19/08 19:19pm] I've had my mac for two years, and no issues. No slowdowns, nothing. But I bought a simple little eee box so I could run Microsoft Project and a few other developer software titles. I'm used to my PCs crapping out and whatnot after a few months of use, but not 2 weeks. I didn't load norton right away cause I rarely even touch the Pc. Like I said, I only use it really for the afore mentioned things. But this just seemed very unusually, even for a PC I love the little thing though Not a powerful device, but super silent and energy efficient. I just wished these things could run Os-x.

I bought Norton and installed it. It cleaned everything up after two reboots. But it slows everything down. I think since I'm using this strictly for business apps and self-training, removing doing an ip-config /release after bootup would be prudent indeed.

There ARE viruses that infect macs from time to time. But it's very rare. When it happens on a mAC it's big news. The viruses which infect Pcs are .exe binaries and these don't run on MACS. So a large part of it is that it's a numbers game. PCS dominate the market. But regardless, it's normally taken me at least 4 months or so for something shity to happen to a PC that I hammered away at. On this Pc, I didn't do anything. I installed 4 software titles, avoided any of the torrent or download sites. And behaved. And bam! 2 weeks.

Same here. I had a trojan virus download to my mac, but .exe for PCs are benign on macs. They don't do anything. I wasn't aware that MAC had frequent virus definition updates. I've seen the Mac updates several times, but didn't realize that's what was meant by "Security updates". I wonder why Norton makes a product for mac. Does this mean that Macs are still vunerable? This is the longest I've ever owned a computer since Ive been on the Internet where nothing..And I mean NOTHING bad has happenned to it. I do love my mac But like I said, the PC I bought was specifically so I could run certain business titles that aren't offered on MAC. So I needed a PC as well. And I don't *hate* PCS. I rather like Microsoft software too. Its just, I LOVE my mac . I do hate Norton Internet software though

I do hate Norton Internet software though no computer is without its vulnerabilities I think that apple has a big job keeping the mac virus free reputation, mac users shouldn't be so blasé, but yeah, I wonder if using 3rd party products is just doubling up? or for peace of mind for the truly paranoid.

Fer fuck's sake. I own a mac. I love my mac. But as I mentioned there's some software that I need to run for business reasons. And I'm didn't want to run Windows on Mac to do it. But yeah--I love my mac
