Yeah, I guess that's 15 too many if you feel threatened by the existence of people who are different from you. Dunno. . . I was born in 1979. A lot has changed in my lifetime, but basically, growing up when I did, in a blue state, with a socially liberal family, and spending my whole adult life in a very gay city, I've been less touched by cultural homophobia than most. I'm bi, and when I first had a female partner, I could feel eyes on us a bit compared to being with a guy, but basically, my world didn't change that much. I've been so privileged. So this whole, "be as gay as you like as long as I don't have to look at you" business is fairly foreign to me, and I don't find this thinly-veiled homophobia to be much less offensive than the bible-thumpers with the "faggots burn in hell" signs. It's all just unbelievably ignorant. Over WHAT, you know? As Anxy said, to get all worked up over the 'gay lifestyle' seems pretty wacky when you consider how insignificant the difference really is. /rant "What's 'non-sequitur' mean? And I don't think any gay people are complaining that there are straight people in the media. I believe you are entirely missing the point. Gay people insisting on being "embraced" has nothing to do with an expectation that people BE gay. Just that gay people are allowed to be gay, and have equal rights, and not be threatened or harassed or barred from public life. Basically, to have the same freedoms as you and be left the hell alone. That's all people want. When black folks (and supporters) marched in the 60s, were they asking to be "embraced"? I don't think so. I think they were just asking for equality. Same deal here. I'm pretty sure that young people aren't going to start changing their sexual orientations to be accepted (by the gay minority? ), because it doesn't WORK that way. If it did, most gay people alive today would have made themselves straight when they were young in order to be accepted. Many tried. They all failed. I think your concern for the youth of America is pretty misplaced. As far as "if you don't think homosexuality is the way to go you shouldn't be frowned at either- you shouldn't be considered offensive- everyone has a right to an opinion" . . . I guess. What you're saying is, people have the right to be bigoted. And I agree, they do. But they DON'T have the right to impose that on me and my life. They don't have the right to be violent, or to keep me from full civil equality. Gay people will be happy to put down the picket signs and go about our lives just as soon as straight people will stop trying to beat our asses and make laws against us. Really, we've got groceries to buy and laundry to do. Those rainbow flags and feather boas don't wash themselves! "What's 'non-sequitur' mean? Do I look it up in a Fag-to-English dictionary?" | |
