Wakamatsu Becomes First Asian-American Big League Manager This is now the second person I went to school with (I was a Freshman when they were Seniors) that is now coaching/managing a major professional sports team. From the class of 1980 from Hayward High Don Wakamatsu is now the new Manager of the Seattle Mariners and Jack Del Rio is the head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
So out of the 62 Pro MLB and NFL teams, the same High School (out of 14,000 + High Schools in the US) produced two of those Coaches/Managers is pretty impressive. http://www.ktvu.com/sport...etail.html SEATTLE -- Oakland A's bench coach Don Wakamatsu has been hired by the Seattle Mariners, becoming the first Asian-American manager in major league baseball history. Wakamatsu became the 14th manager in Mariners history. He was bench coach for the Oakland Athletics last season. Before that he spent five years with the Texas Rangers. The 45-year-old was among a field of seven candidates interviewed by Mariners' general manager Jack Zdurencik. None of the seven had previous major league managerial experience. Wakamatsu, a former catcher, spent his playing career in the minors. His final season in the minors was in 1996 as player-coach of the Mariners' Double-A Port City farm team.
