Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche New York

I saw Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut film Synecdoche New York on Saturday night and thought it was brilliant. It is definitly not a film that you will dance out of the theatre to, but it will haunt you for days afterwards. Phillip Seymour Hoffman, in a tour-de-force performance, plays a playwright who is married to a visual artist (Catherine Keener). Her career is on the rise, while his is fairly stagnant. They have a young daughter. Hoffman bangs his head on the mirror while shaving one morning, and what happens next may or may not be all happening in his mind. The film deals with Art, Creativity, Dating, Death and Everything. There are characters of characters of characters. It is a brave film, like nothing Hollywood has ever produced before, bleak and beautiful. I found myself wanting to go find Charlie Kaufman and just say, "Thanks for your brilliant vision, and by the way, are you OK?"

My thread on Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche New York was up a few minutes before the other one, but it doesn't really matter. Go see the film.
