OK ... I'm back. Watcha. I'm back... not that anyone missed me though eh?!
Not been on in a while - a few weeks ago my baby Elsa got sick. Our GP sent her to the hospital with a UTI and it turns out that she has heart problems. We'd been on the ward for a while and I'd been asleep for about an hour and I wake up and I'm somehow sat upright talking to one of the nurses who is over Elsa taking her obs. I think I must have still been asleep as she's talking to me! Weird. Anyway - I eventually roused myself from the sleep fog and realised that she'd been there for quite a while and she was bent over her paying attention to her chest and pulse and I realised that something was very wrong. I asked her what the matter was and she dashed off and came back with a consultant and the room was suddenly full of nurses and doctors and Elsa is hooked up to 2 heart monitors and an ECG machine. Elsa's heartbeat was unbelievably fast and at one point it reached 300 beats per minute. She was ghostly pale and her body was burning although when they took her temp it was normal (?!) She had an episode of Supraventrical Tachycardia, which lasted for almost 2 hours. When the tachycardia finally slowed down they also found that she had a small hole in her heart. They let her out after 4 days. Since then we've been to several hospital appointments - the good news is that the hole seems to have healed up and the cardiologist thinks that it was caused by the infection of the UTI. But they're still monitoring the SVT's and we have to go back in 3 weeks for another set of tests. My poor baby> She's fine now and seems to be doing well - so far she hasn't had any more episodes. Does anyone have any experience of Supraventricular Tachycardia? I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off

whoa
my middle son had a hole in his heart when he was, but no symptoms apart from a slight murmur. It was completely healed up by the time he was 12 months. It was quite a drama, all the tests he had to have when he was just newborn. He was taking his first ever sleep (outside of my womb) and they were poking him and prodding him with cold hands and electrodes You poor things glad to hear it sounds like it resolved itself too! | |

Aww - thanks guys. I really appreciate the well wishes.
I'm surprised by how many people have told me that their little ones have had heart murmers that healed up - I'm just so happy that it doesn't effect them. I'm so paranoid that she's going to have another SVT. They told me that if she keeps going into them or stays in one for a long period of time, then her heart could get tired and just go into failure They said that if she had a sustained one that I should get her to hospital (they've given us open access to the ward) or I can try to bring her out of it by (and I kid you not...) dunking her head in ice cold water for 5-10 seconds Hospital it is then! What's really weird about this is that I knew that she was getting ill about a week beforehand and that it wasn't just some virus - I KNEW that she was getting a UTI and I had actually seen her hooked up to heart monitors (which is extremely weird as it's not something that they do with UTI sufferers) It's like I had this psychic mummy moment or something. The GP that sent us to the hospital phoned me at home when she got out and said that he had never had someone who just KNEW that their baby was ill with somthing that they weren't showing symptoms for - my deep concern was the main reason he sent us, normally he would have sent us home with instructions to give extra fluids and adminster calpol. He said he was sending me kudos and wanted to know what next week's lottery numbers were Zombie - poor little mite! I'm glad he's ok now though - your son too Chilli. It's awful seeing your little one being poked and prodded and hooked up to all those monitors. The worst thing though was when the STUPID bitch of a doctor took many, MANY attempts to get her canula in - Elsa screamed and screamed - oh my heart broke into a thousand pieces - how I didn't get up and drag the bitch out by her hair I'll never know . In the end another dr came in and got it in first time! I could have kissed him! All the doctors and nurses fell in love with her as she's such a smilie baby (as ill as she was) everyone wanted to look after her! Anyway - they're monitoring her now, and I'm forever checking for the signs - but so far so good. Thanks again for the love and support You're all pretty fab in here I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off

BTW - she doesn't always have her diddy (dummy/pacifier) in - the doctors told us that it's good that she uses one as the sucking motion can stop the 'heart hiccup' that causes the SVTs. I must find one of her without one to post I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off

the cardiologist told us it was so common it should be considered a variation on normal! The worst thing though was when the STUPID bitch of a doctor took many, MANY attempts to get her canula in - Elsa screamed and screamed - oh my heart broke into a thousand pieces
