Great SFX. Great alien costume. Pretty believable storyline. One of those rare films that's better than its original.

I'm way more into ALIEN then Aliens (the sequel basically aped scenes from the first one, had way cheaper special effects/sets/costumes, silly dialogue, and an action movie type Rambo mood, yuck!). It also simplified down the alien life forms as very earthly termite like animals. Not scary anymore in my opinion!

(Aliens was so cheap that instead of making a computer generated landscape for the computer diagram on the spaceship viewscreens like in the first one, they just put strips of light on a model landscape and moved a camera over it)

But I know a lot of mass audiences loved it for being a popcorn action film.

Yikes! Alien had some cheesy SFX lol. I mean CHEESY! Aliens had far superior effects, of course due to advancement of technology. And yeah, Alien was a near-bore fest while Aliens was action.

Without a shadow of a doubt- Aliens, even if it is more of a horror movie than a sci-fi movie. I'd venture to say that it's the best movie of the 80s, period.

Have you compared the effects/sets/style? Do you know what I'm talking about above with the computer readout? I made a video once that compared scenes of the two back to back. For one thing the first one had a bigger chuck of budget put towards sets, costumes, and hardware, and better artists working on it, and a better director for original intelligent artsy horror: Ridley Scott. Certainly the first one had a very silly main explosion of the oil tankers that looked like a video game graphic.

Compare if you will:

The way the facehugger looks (it's underside)
The way the eggs look and how they open
The way the planet landing looks, the computer readouts, the way the models are lit
The way the planet landscape looks
The way the "alien" sets look
The way the uniforms and costumes look
The hallways, the doors, the lighting
And most importantly, the way the little alien looks when its coming out of the stomach (the way its all staged and acted).

the sequel had cheap movie stylistics: like dream sequences, little girl in peril...

I happen to feel Aliens is a dumbfest... like Rambo...or Commando...

compare these stage designs and their scale:

Yeah...we're just gonna agree to disagree on this one. You're seeing it from a totally different slant than I am. It's Artsy vs Action, and I'm on the action side of it.

Dune! if U like Arthouse Sci Fi!

i'd love to say dune because i love me some david lynch, but i can't get through that movie. it's beautiful to look at, but damn. zzz

i tried reading the book, too. not a success. redface

omfg

Listen...rent the movie, buy a mood-altering vice of your choice (wine, whisky or weed) and watch it again.

The book can be hard to get through, but you should practice first with...say...Lord of the Rings.

I just bought the 6th book in the series & I can't wait to read through it. Herbert does an amazing job at dealing with issues such as religion, destiny, and even human evolution in his complicated story.

So to answer the original question of this thread...I vote; DUNE.

Followed closely by Star Wars (both ESB & ROJ).

Also, an honorable mention goes to;
- Alien
- Enemy Mine
- Blade Runner
- Tron
- Flight Of The Navigator
- Flash Gordon
- Terminator
- The Running Man
...and lets not forget;
- SPACEBALLS!!!

No, I beleive Heretics of Dune was. Chapterhouse was written from his notes. And his son Brian Herbert with Kevin J Anderson (he's also written some Star Wars) wrote Hunters & Sandworms from an outline that they found in a vault (or something like that). I also have House Corrino on hardcover that I am waiting to read afterwards.

That's the one I've gotten up to! Heretics of Dune! It's amazing how this story evolves! from reading the cover Chapter House is focusing more on the Benejezerit Witches & how they're trying to gain back control!

I hated this movie. I went with my family to see it when I was around 14 and at the time I was into Star Wars and laser guns and stuff like that, not sentimental crap like this film. barf

Thank you, I watched it on the big screen when I was a kid and thought it was so obviously pandering to the audience.

Yeah like the cute like alien is gonna die?? even then I knew it was just being sugar forced fed.

but me and Spielberg have always had issues.

Better acting in Aliens by who? The Mother Bitch Alien? Sigourney is excellent in both, but the first film has a cast to die for: John Hurt, Iam Holm, Veronica Cartwright, etc...

And I like Aliens a lot but the fist one is a frigging masterpiece.PERIOD lol

Veronica Cartwright can suck my ass- she annoys the hell out of me in the first movie. lol I thought Sigourney was much better in Aliens, and I think the other characters are better in the sequel as well.

Veronica C. was supposed to be annoying, and she excelled at that lol you´re probably right about Sigourney though. she was even nominated for an oscar for aliens . I love her. She is such an underrated actress.
