This is such a topic, how depressing.

My last relationship was ruined by a lack of romanticism, the fact that he was too much of a math/science guy for my taste, he was waaay too overbearing and wouldn't let me smoke/drink/etc, and he was too much a part of my old life.

Compatibility has to be in four areas:

spirituality (gotta have God in your life),
politics (gotta be an activist),
ambition/life goals (gotta be going somewhere)
cultural tastes (don't TOUCH my stereo )

We don't have to be the same, but we have to at least complement each other, not contradict.

My wife likes some Prince stuff but sometimes she throws a tantrum if I listen to too much Prince. If she said "me or Prince" that'd be a compatibility problem for sure!

Uncleanliness. It makes me ill when someone doesn't bathe at least once a day, and do their all the time. You can't wear things twice without washing them.
