Maybe it wasn't a big stretch considering what he wears to swim in...he's use to exposing himself on tv. Hell, I didn't even watch it. When I don't much care about the guest host or the musical act I give SNL a pass. I haven't watched it in a long time. I think the last time I really watched SNL was the Steve Martin/Prince show. LOVED it. Would have watched it for either one of them. i usually avoid athlete-hosted SNL episodes like the plague, but we wanted to see just exactly how horrible michael phelps would be and he did not disappoint. had it been some WB teen soap heartthrob or something, i would have given the show a pass altogether last week. i think SNL went to crap years ago. Agreed Did you watch the Steve Martin/Prince episode (I don't want to just ASSUME you did though it is rather likely) Did you like that episode? To me, Steve Martin just showed what SNL is lacking. To put it really sappy...he took them to school. I'm firmly planted in denial

SNL seems to go back and forth between really edgy, risky humor and really dumb, knuckle-scraper humor. unfortunately they've been indulging in the latter for at least the past four years.

so, the consensus is.... he was about as "present" in the skits as, say, Christopher Walken is when he hosts?

that's easy to say, and it's been said for almost 30 years! But the fact is, it's always been spotty. I think if we watched them say "cheesburger, cheeseburger" or "the keeler beez" for the first time today I think it would be just as hit and miss. Has no one noticed Chevy Chase's impression of Gerald Ford fercrissakes?! It's not an impersonation, but somehow it's classic! They have very funny stuff every week, surrounded by horrible stuff. SNL is never really that enjoyable until they hack off the 30 minutes of crap in each episode and syndicate it to some cable channel.
even the REALLY shitty seasons come off halfway decent then. [Edited 9/16/08 16:39pm]

I'm just saying, as with many things, I think nostalgia clouds a young jedi's mind. it's just a common thing to say it's "not what it used to be," but I think in many ways it is. Or it may be more correct to say that "it used to be the same as it is now" ie often crappy. Not that you or anyone else should have to like any era of it, of course. My Legacy
