I love this one, "Pay Day" from 1922. Look at how he builds the wall, too funny. And later he's drunk on the street, trying to get on the train. Hilarious!

He tries to light up a big sausage here, because he thinks it's a cigar! That is classic Chaplin.

I also really need to get all those early Essanay and Mutual films on DVD some day.

Also, do you know the documentary "Unknown Chaplin"? It shows how he worked, filming every idea he had, then throwing away endless hours of celluloid. It shows some really funny scenes, it's a shame some of them didn't make it into the final films. Some of it can be found on youtube, too.

A genius.

"We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in: machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost."

~ excerpt from final speech in The Great Dictator (1940)
